Spaced Out In Leiden.

Are you familiar with Øresund Space Collective? Do you like Totally Improvised Space Rock? Then you have to listen to this one. It is the recording of their show from june 21 at Sub071, Leiden, Holland.
This recording gives you an impression of a nice evening that I had in that small venue together with about twentyfive others. The vibe was really great that night and it was also shown by the members of Øresund Space Collective. The jams were excellent and it was great to see the gently bobbling heads of the musicians while joints were passed on the stage (and among the audience!).
I'm glad that Øresund Space Collective have recorded their shows, so I can re-experience this one over and over again. It's a great souvenir! Enjoy!

The Øresund (ur-re-suun) Space Collective is a one of a kind musical project. We are a collective of musicians from Denmark and Sweden that play entirely improvised rock music. No songs, no pre-constructed rhythms, just pure musical energy generated from the heart of the musicians. Name another band that sets up on the stage and just plays for 2, 3 or even 5 hr concerts for the fans?? I guess you can’t? Musically the band is inspired by a large number of bands on the space rock scene like Hawkwind, Ozric Tentacles, Hidria Spacefolk but equally so by 70’s bands like GONG, Sly and the Family stone, and Miles Davis.

The band has been creating music since 2005, when they played their first live concert. Before this the collective was mainly the musicians from Mantric Muse (Denmark) and Bland Bladen (Sweden), joining together with Dr. Space for free form jam sessions in the rehearsal room. Since this time the collective has grown and incorporates excellent musicians from a number of groups including the Carpet Knights (Sweden), Siena Root (Sweden), Causa Sui (Denmark), The Univerzals (Denmark), and several other groups. Most recently, the band played live and in the studio with Danish guitar legend, Claus Bøhling from Hurdy Gurdy and Secret Oyster fame.

The has played and headlined many festivals in Europe including Space Rock Odyssey (Sweden), Slotsskogen goes Progressive (Sweden), Kildemose Festival (Denmark), Space Force One (Finland), Psychedelic Network (Germany), Roadburn Festival (Holland), Occultrance Festival (Belgium) and will in Sept go and play one of the first psychedelic rock music festivals in India!

The band has released 10 albums. since the debut in Jan 2006 on the Transubstans Label out of Sweden. In 2011 the band has or will release 4 records, including a double vinyl only release from their appearance at the legendary, Roadburn Festival in Holland.

Spaced Out In The Hague.

At some blogs I saw posts about the Øresund Space Collective performance at Roadburn. This post is about the pre Roadburn performance at De Vinger.
De Vinger (The Finger) is a small bar in The Hague and I was really surprised Øresund Space Collective was announced there. The Collective did only one performance in The Netherlands in the past and now they've played in my home city! Awesome!
As I expected, Øresund Space Collective did play a great show. It was an over two hours during Space Trip. An unforgettable experience. But too bad, they didn't recorded all of it, so here's an over one hour recording.
What also surprised me was the fact there were at the most 25 visitors at this great show. (People don't know what they have missed or The Hague isn't ready for totally improvised Space Rock!)
It was really nice to see Dr. Space enjoying his music in his fluorescent wizard robe! I hope they will visit The Hague again sometimes. Maybe then there will be a better audience. Enjoy this experience!

Freak Out In Space, Baby!

After I published the following Øresund Space Collective albums The Black Tomato, Inside Your Head and Good Planets Are Hard To Find it's time for their self-title debute album. Again this album doesn't disappiont. Freak out in space, baby!

The Øresund Space Collective was formed in April 2004. The collective is a group of Danish, Swedish and American musicians that get together as often as possible for free form improvised space rock music. The flavour of the music is different with each session. The jams can often combine complex interplay between guitar and synthesizer as well intense drumming and bass playing. We enter into the genre of funk, jazz, reggae and space rock as we improvise our way along. The jam sessions alternate between Malmö and København across the Øresund bridge! The core of the collective features current and former members of the Danish bands Mantric Muse and Gas Giant as well as the Swedish bands Bland Bladen. Occasionally other musicians join as well from other Swedish band like the Carpet Knights and Sgt. Sunshine. Mantric Muse is an all instrumental progressive psychedelic space rock band, who has recorded an CD-EP entitled, Picks in Space and a full length CD, called Kap Næb (currently looking for a label to release it). The band has played concerts in and around København for the last 6 years. Gas Giant are an internationally known heavy psychedelic space rock band, who have toured all over Europe and have released several albums, with the latest called Mana. Bland Bladen, are a progressive instrumental space rock band based in Malmö, Sweden. The band released a debut CD-R in 2004on their own and has played mainly in Sweden but also in København (with Mantric Muse). The collective records all of the jam sessions and makes these available to fans via the web site in MP3 format. We currently have over 20 hours of material on the web site for free download. The band has released 10 limited edition CD's with the best of the jam sessions. The band records in the studio every 6-8 months and plans to release several CDs a year. Our first CD came out in Jan 2006 on Transubstans Records in Malmo, Sweden

Øresund Space Collective - Good Planets Are Hard To Find

This is the most recent album of Øresund Space Collective and not Inside Your Head as I said in my previous ØSC post.
This one is ripped from vinyl. Special thanks and credits to Zillagord!

This is the 5th CD by the all improvised space rock band from the Copenhagen-Malmö region of Scandinavia (Øresund). It was recorded at the Black Tornado Studios in November 2007 and featured new members on drums, percussion, bass, guitar and sitar that had never been in the studio with the band before. The dynamics and vibe was different and KG from the band Siena Root played some amazing sitar on the opening and closing pieces of music on the CD. We think you will find the music has a more progressive and melodic element and is less spacey than our previous releases. The same cool vibe and long journeys await the patient listener. The CD was mixed by Steve Hayes (Secret Saucer) in the USA. Steve also provides on synthesizer solo on Orbital Elevator to replace one that Mogens played when his synthesizer went out of tune. Steve has different ears and different gear so the mix is unique. The band allowed Steve full freedom in the mix process, so he actually becomes more a part of the musical project, so to speak. The CD was mastered to give a nice round but intense rich sound by Henrik Udd, who had mixed and mastered the band's previous 2 albums. The band on this release was: KG- Sitar, Guitar; Tobias- Guitars; Mogens- Hammond and Synthesizers; Jocke and Thomas- Bass; PIB- Drums; Luz- Percussion; Dr. Space- Synthesizers The band has played the Kildemose Festival, headlined the Slottskoggen goes Progressive Festival and also played the Space Rock Odyssey 2008 Festival in Uppsala in 2008. Currently, the band has plans to play gigs in Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway, in March and April 2009, including opening for Hawkwind at Oslo's legendary Rockefeller Venue on April 18th.

Øresund Space Collective - Inside Your Head

Earlier before I did post some Øresund Space Collective stuff. Here is the latest album.
I have to thank Mari for this contribution.

"Leave your normal life behind, close your eyes and fly into the unknown reaches of your mind. The music is meant to get Inside Your Head and give you a pleasureful and unique listening experience. You don`t know where it is going or what you will hear. You just go with the flow of the band."

Øresund Space Collective - The Black Tomato

This is really a great album from these Psychedelic Space Rockers from Denmark, Sweden and The U.S.A.

Wow, these guys are really on a roll. Hot on the heels of their outstanding 2-CD "It's All About Delay" album, Øresund Space Collective (OSC) are back with a brand new set of space jams. The Black Tomato consists of three tracks, totalling nearly 80 minutes of all instrumental improvisational space rocking bliss.

The CD kicks off with the nearly 40 minute "RumBle", which begins with a stoned jamming cosmic hard rocking space groove. There's some ripping trip guitar, freaked out alien electronics, and the whole atmosphere is like a deep space stoner acid jam. This is some of the heaviest music I've heard from OSC yet. And as you can imagine on a 40 minute improv jam, the music twists and turns through a multitude of moods and themes, though of course the key to real appreciation is to just sit back and surrender yourself to wherever the band wants to take you. It's a guided tour with the focus on the voyage and destination is the least of your concerns. OSC have a fluid cast of participants but everyone has more or less played with each other enough that it's no surprise that they continue to crank out ass kicking space jams that you can groove to endlessly! Some of it brings to mind a cross between Ozric Tentacles and Alien Planetscapes.

Next up is the 32 minute "The Black Tomato", another space rocking excursion. It's got some killer melodic development that really hooked me, while retaining the driving jam quality throughout. The organ and heavy keyboards give the music a 70s hard prog-psych edge that I really liked, and combined with the electronics, guitars and pounding rhythm section makes for an absolutely awesome space rock journey. Lots of cool Gong/Hillage elements and I even detected some moments of Frippertronic styled guitar, but mostly this is searing acidic mucho cosmic heavy jamming space rock. OSC have cultivated a real knack for taking off and exploring while keeping these loooooong jams comprehensible and consistently seductive throughout. Finally, rounding out the set is the relatively short (6 minutes) "Viking Cleaner", a quirky, playful, but totally spaced out rhythmic groove tune that makes for an appropriate finale to this outstanding set. These guys gotta start making the rounds of the festival circuit.

For more information you can visit the Øresund Space Collective website.
There are STILL many hours of jams you can download from their site!

Life after Gas Giant: Øresund Space Collective

From Copenhagen, Denmark comes Øresund Space Collective,
a Space, Psych, Stoner Rock collective featuring two members from Gas Giant. In 2007 they released their third album called  The Black Tomato.
It's a band with apperance of many guest musicians. Sometimes they play up to 12 men on one stage. There are many influences, like Pink Floyd, Ozric Tentacles and Black Sabbath.

The Øresund Space Collective (OSC) had their first jamsession in April 2004, encouraged by longtime spacerock-fanatic Scott Heller; aka Dr. Space. The collective is a group of Danish, Swedish and American musicians that get together as often as possible for free form improvised cosmic music. The flavour of the music is different with each session.

The stretched out jams can often combine complex interplay between guitar and synthesizer as well intense drumming and bass playing. Sometimes chaotic, sometimes melodic but most of the time funky and cosmic ! We enter into the genre of funk, jazz, reggae, kraut, stoner, folk, world, electronica and space rock ( and probably some others) as we improvise our way along. The jam sessions alternate between Malmö and København across the Øresund bridge, which connects Denmark & Sweden! The core of the collective features current and former members of the Danish bands Mantric Muse and Gas Giant as well as the Swedish band Bland Bladen. Quite often other musicians join as well from other Swedish bands like the Carpet Knights, Drahk von Trip and Sgt. Sunshine.
