Villa Rocka is a dual disc with a audio side and a DVD side released by the band 3 Speed Automatic. This trio from Rotterdam, Holland plays a great mix of Hard Rock and Stoner Rock with seventies influences.

The audio part of this disc contains 6 tracks. The first five tracks were already on the album No Man's Land. So these songs are nothing new. (Although it's always alright to hear the song Walk On The Sun!) Villa Rocka is all about the sixth track that is called Who Knows What Evil Lurks In The Hearts Of Men... The Shadow Knows. This song is an almost 23 minute lasting epic masterpiece. This song was recorded as a soundtrack for the Dutch cult movie Horizonica. Enjoy!

"The starting point of 3Speed Automatic’s music can be found in the southern hardrock blues genre played by Five Horse Johnson, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Dixie Witch and also in the primitive, savage whip-rock ‘n’ roll of Motorhead and AC/DC. But the band interprets it all with an Atomic Bitchwax-attitude marked enough, especially when Guido launches himself in very good burning Ed Mundell-like psych-blues solos. The overall guitar tone of Guido DeBrichy ranges from loud and gritty to surprisingly melodic. Sunset In A New Town

Smoking Bird is a Spanish band that plays 70's influenced Hard Rock. Their music contains also a pinch of Stoner Rock.

Their great album Sunset In A New Town is their first full-length release and after this album they've released two more in 2006 and 2010.

The songs from Sunset In A New Town are quite energetic and have a real Rock 'n' Roll vibe. Do not expect any lengthy Psychedelic jams or other experimental knick-knacks. This is just straight forward and no bullshit Hard Rock music. Enjoy!

Smoking Bird was born in 1997.

By 1998 the band released its first demo, "Fuckin' A Bottle", 2000 marked the release of "Smoking Bird". "Losing Touch" CD/EP is recorded and released in 2001.

In September of 2002 Smoking Bird recorded their first full length album "Sunset In A New Town" produced with Fernando Pardo. Once again, the band enjoyed rave reviews.

All along 2005 and after two years on the road, Smoking Bird recorded and self-produced "Naughty Little Girls",released in early 2006.

"Survivors" was the next step for the band, self-produced, released in 2010 and recorded at the band own studios for the first time.

In 2011, Smoking Bird contributed with a song to the Monster Magnet tribute, "Kiss The Right Side Of Your Brain" released by Monster Fuzz Records.

The next band contribution is The Heavy Co. a.k.a. The Heavy Company or shortened to THC. This trio from Lafayette and Indianapolis, USA plays some impressive Psychedelic Stoner Rock. Their free download debut EP The Heavy (Please Tune In…) is an outstanding piece of music.

THC (I love this abbreviation) is according to their Facebook page influenced by the following bands: Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Fu Manchu, Nebula and Clutch.

Beside the Stoner sound are also the vibes of the seventies clearly present in their music. All the six songs on this EP are high quality compositions. Enjoy!

Formed in the Fall of 2008, the Heavy Co. has been steadily working on writing, recording, and performing distinctive psychedelic rock music that combines the vibe of classic rock, the acid flashbacks of Haight-Ashbury and Swinging London, and the improvisational driven live experience of the jam band scene. The band was formed by members of Indiana’s burgeoning doom/stoner rock scene seeking a subtler approach to getting spaced and fuzzy, musically speaking.

Greatly influenced by the giants of classic rock such as Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin, the Heavy Co. also gives credit to modern underground rockers Fu Manchu, Nebula, and Clutch for helping form the power trio’s unique approach to blues-driven, grooved-out psychedelia.

Walk On The Sun

3 Speed Automatic is a Dutch Stoner Rock band with Hard Rock and 70's influences. This band was formerly known as Taildragger. This trio made two albums, Nomans Land and Villa Rocka, both released in 2004 and one EP, Songs from Tijuana, released in 2006. This band is famous in The Netherlands because of their great live performances. You must hear this awesome album! The absolute highlight of this album is the song Walk On The Sun. Enjoy!

The press release for Rotterdam, Holland's, 3Speed Automatic (3SA), describes them as a band who "heavily drinks from the golden chalice of hoary 70's rock," and that isn't too far from the truth. While their influences may hearken back to the polyester era, this is no modern act trying to sound retro. Comprised of former members of Taildragger, The 70's worship of 3SA is most evident in the fat tones and stripped-down sound of the recording, touching bases in the houses of AC/DC and Thin Lizzy (track 7, "2nd Coming," struck me as particularly Lizzyesque). After getting a little worn out on acts throwing too many layers of redundant overdubs and unintelligible, bloody-throat vocals into every song, this 3SA disc is a welcome listen that damn near bullseyes my rock and roll sweet spot.

The record opens with the instrumental, "Splitting the Atom," beginning-to-end the most uptempo song, and a great slice of gritty rock and roll that gives you a pretty good idea of what the band is all about. 3SA is not a band that is trying to sound overly heavy, or bludgeon you to death with punishing riffs. This is just a straight up, old school heavy rock band. There is a bit of psychedelia here and there along the lines of Nebula's first couple records, but 3SA doesn't live there. In fact, track 2, "NoMans Land," sounds like Bleach-era Nirvana, with Cobainesque vocals, a rolling bass progression, and a grainy rock production that seems to tip its hat to the work Jack Endino was doing in Seattle in the late 80s and early 90s. Track 4, "Took the Train," has a sleazy groove to it that I really enjoy. This is nearly my favorite track, if only because of the awesome, fuzzed-out bass solo. With its loping swing, track 6, "Stranded," is the most 70s-throwback track on the album, with wah guitar and hammond organ (provided by Yasmin) taking up space in a nicely layered mix. The fat lead guitar tone of the outro brings the song to a nice close, with additional tracks of guitar building to a very satisfying ending.

The best track on the record to my ears, though, is the closer, "Walk on the Sun." This is easily the most psychedelic song of the offering, with a moody bass groove, tasty drums, and scathing guitar, as well as another appearance from the hammond. There are some spoken samples, a tactic that usually annoys me, that do work here. The song builds from a sparse initial groove, getting more and more intense as the tempo builds, reaching a frenzy just before reprising the original tempo and refrain. Good stuff, this song.

3SA has delivered an excellent collection of heavy, well-played rock with serviceable vocals, and a recording where attention to tone was obviously the order of the day. I am eager to hear what these guys come up with next, as their take on stripped-down old school rock is just what the music world needs these days.

The Latest Sensation From The Hague.

Lucid is a band from my home city and they play some awesome drug-fuelled Psychedelic Garage Rock. This 10" EP definitely kicks ass! There are obvious influences of MC5 and The Stooges, but you can also hear some more sounds of todays Stoner Rock. Their music is high energetic and loud! This is yet another great Motorwolf recording! This EP is pressed in a limited number of 200 copies. So get it fast as possible! Enjoy!

Having cool influences is not always enough, you have to have your own voice too.

Luckily for the Netherlands Lucid, the trio have managed to embrace the space rock and psychedelic fury of the 60’s without sounding like clones.

Selwyn Slop (vocals and bass), Bart Schotman (guitar) and Maarten van Oers (drums) explore hard rock, metal and small doses of fuzz to develop their sound.

‘Black Eyed Woman’, the stand out track of this release, is a cauldron of down-tuned licks and Ozzy-esque vocals, backed up by equal amounts of fuzz and feedback.

This could have easily been a sure fire hit in the drug-fuelled haze of groundbreaking 70’s rock. The solos are not bad either.

‘Shatter’ meanwhile, plays on Bold As Love-era Hendrix, while combining Fu Manchu’s love of no frills Californian laid back rock.

On the other hand, ‘Godspeed’ is a fast tempo rocker where the trio use their instruments as projectile weapons that enhance their artillery.

However, ‘Black Sheep’ is evidence of a band that is beginning to zone out to their own slow sci-fi jams.

A fine set of tracks that cling onto mystic 70’s charm long enough to galvanise the trios sound.

The Pink Alchemist

This is the second album of The Soulbreaker Company, the great Hard Rock/Blues/70's Rock band from Basque Country. This album is in comparison to there debut album Hot Smoke & Heavy Blues a big step forward. The songs are better. The band even dares to use brass horns on some songs. Beside heavy songs there are also some mellow tracks. The Pink Alchemist is a highly recommended album by a great band. They are working now on their third album. For now: Enjoy The Pink Alchemist!

Hot Smoke & Heavy Blues

I saw this band perform in a local bar called De Vinger yesterday. The Soulbreaker Company is a band from Basque country that plays a combination of Hard Rock, Blues rock and 70's Rock. The show they performed last night was quite impressive. According to their MySpace The Soulbreaker Company is influenced by the following: Led Zeppelin, Raw Material, Bowie, Beatles, Stones ,Gong, Groundhogs, Atomic Rooster, Dixon II, Amon Duul II, Dark, Magna Carta, J. Coltrane, Hawkwind, Beer, Wilson Picket, Raging Slab, Weed, Black Sabbath,Uriah Heep, Mountain, Wine, Pink Floyd, Monster Magnet, Son House, Black Oak Arkansas and Captain Beyond.
The Hammond organ is an important element in their sound. It sometimes reminds me of the band Blood Of The Sun. The Soulbreaker Company is blessed with an awesome singer. You really should listen this great debut album. Enjoy!

Not Fragile

Like Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak, this album was important in my early youth. Bachman-Turner Overdrive was a Canadian 70's Hard Rock band. They have made several albums, but Not Fragile was the most famous one. Everybody knows the song You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet. But I must say there are better songs on this album like Not Fragile, Roll On Down The Highway, Blue Moanin' and Second Hand. Enjoy!

After gaining some recognition from the success of the band's previous album, Bachman-Turner Overdrive got around to recording Not Fragile. Not only had one of the three Bachman brothers (Tim, the rhythm guitarist) left the band to BTO's advantage, but Randy Bachman and C.F. Turner had clearly grown musically. To the album's benefit, most of the material on Not Fragile are the band's much-liked rock anthems, ranging from the hyper-distorted title track, through the famous but far more timid song "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet." Indeed, for hard rock fanatics, it doesn't come much better than on Not Fragile. Randy's electrifying lead guitar is here more raucous than ever before, as are his rowdy vocals (particularly noticeable on the predictable, but fun "Sledgehammer"). The man steals the show on Not Fragile through his extensive and often astounding guitar solos. Generally, though, Bachman-Turner Overdrive are at their prime as a whole, both in songwriting and playing terms. As regards the mixing, it's hard to find fault with this release. The drums are clear but not so prominent that they dominate the recording, while the guitars, along with the bass, are kept rigidly in their place. Not Fragile is one of the finest arena rock albums of the era, featuring all the hallmarks of what makes a classic release in the genre. Randy's impressive guitar work and typically boisterous vocals complement the overall framework of the album superbly, as do the crunchy rhythm guitars. This release will astound fans of the genre and band, while those thoroughly against stadium rock may find something to convert their views.

Here is another great band from Basque Country! Positiva plays a great combination of Stoner Rock and 70's Hard Rock. Prodigal Songs is their second album and it is a real recommendation! This album contains a lot kicking-ass and stimulating songs. This band has a real cool singer and the musicians play awesome. The influences according to MySpace are: Captain Beyond, Budgie, Blue Öyster Cult, GrandFunk RailRoad, MC5, Frijid Pink, Led Zeppelin, Allman Brothers, Poco, Blue Cheer, Pentagram, Black Sabbath, Screaming Trees and Ted Nugent. These are mostly great Hard Rock names, but Positiva sounds so very Stoner! Don't miss this one! Enjoy!

Spain’s Positiva first came to my attention a couple of years ago with their debut album Centaur’s Ride. That album was a collection of heavy rock n roll that owed a debt in equal parts to 70s rock, the whole desert rock scene and the grunge of Screaming Trees and Mudhoney. It was an album that was good without really being essential or even particularly memorable with the exception of a couple of songs.

Well, Positiva released the follow up to their debut titled Prodigal Songs late last year and I have to say right at the start that this is a few notches above the debut in terms of songwriting. The band has dropped almost all of the Kyuss/ Screaming Trees references to focus on an album’s worth of memorable riff rock that is total 70s worship.

Right from the Grand Funk-isms of opener Brother Eagle and Undying Shore you know you’re in for a good time and that feeling is only strengthened by the time Waiting in Vain shows up with its part Sabbath, part Blue Cheer heaviness. The band focus on stoner friendly riffs that is perfect when you’re driving while also laying down some mighty impressive solo spots. Also, the twin guitar attack of Miguel and Julio gives the band a heavy, full sound. Elsewhere on the album, the band gives in to some heavy blues rock which is further bolstered by the rhythm section which adds a much needed weight behind these songs. Catch the Fire and Gropiedom sounds like they owe a little bit to Molly Hatchet and southern rock while the semi acoustic Black Mountain Rock is some more Southern Rock but with an edge to it that’s almost punk in nature. This is easily the best song on the album but Positiva have one more surprise stored away with The Complete Mercy of the Lord and its reverb drenched vocals and is bavguely reminiscent of Hawkwind.

While Positiva derive most of their sound from bands that came before them in the 70s they also manage to add enough originality into the proceedings and the songwriting is consistently of a high quality. The band write great riffs and more importantly, write great songs around these riffs. Prodigal Songs is the sound of a band that has found its sound. I get the feeling that greater things might be in store for them and the band is just getting started but for now, Prodigal Songs is pretty essential for stoner rock fans.

This album was requested a while ago in the C-Box.
Oblivious is a Swedish Stoner Rock band. This band combines their music with 70's Hard Rock. The result is an awesome debut album called Goons And Masters. Their music is according their MySpace influenced by: Dozer, Clutch, Queens Of The Stoneage, Kyuss, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. So you have a small idea of what you're facing! Goons And Masters is a highly recommend album! Enjoy!

If you love Stoner Rock with a little bit of psychedelic hard tunes wherever are necessary (just for the fuzz) and you have in your quiver arrows diving into the magic mix of DOZER and CLUTCH, plus the blessings of your home country Sweden above your head, then, all the omens are by your side and no black cat will pass across your way. Well, about OBLIVIOUS the question, and their debut “Goons And Masters” that seems to have the potential and the guts to make the grand opening in the multitudinous scene of nowadays' Stoner, a movement especially developed in Sweden. But the pretty noticeable thing about OBLIVIOUS is the equable combination they succeed, including vintage touches of SABBATH and BIGELF with FOGHAT’s all-time classic rock ‘n’ roll at the same time. Interesting, huh? Let’s see if goons are more powerful than masters now.

Through 50 minutes of the album, OBLIVIOUS achieve to run time like water and slip inside your ears unexampled. The pompous “Ego Boy” takes the rods and makes the appropriate introduction with the five members of the band in absolute successful way. “Throne” has something between the antiquity of “Easy Livin’” and the aggressiveness of “Electric Worry”, while “Red Eyed Goon” puts the mark of OBLIVIOUS and spreads promises about their instant future- if you listen closely to this song though, you’ll maybe hear even Layne Staley’s readings (RIP). The following “Master Of Time” has a softer, lazy, low-tempo making the mind to lose itself through these colorful clouds of dirty and nasty tunes spreading inside the room. Check your speakers; you will definitely see them come out! “Bring It On Me” does that ‘wuh-wuh’ thing (wuh tuh fuh?!) and travel us back to 70s, when “Blind Faith” shows its Chris Cornell-ian teeth leaving the past 50 minutes behind and wondering how soon this record ended.

There is always a ‘but’ in these cases; we must have demands and be serious when it’s about a debutante band, because the sequence is as difficult as the start and in many occasions we notice bad followings after a good start. “Goons And Masters” is a very good debut album but the curiosity about the next step does not leave me to enjoy it as much as I want to. The good thing is that I have patience and I can wait the next OBLIVIOUS album. Till then, “Ego Boy” will be my appropriate companion, especially this oncoming summer.

Yer from Brazil plays some awesome Retro Rock. There are a lot of influences here, according to their MySpace the following: Hendrix, Free, Stones, Beatles, Faces, Humble Pie, James Gang, Derek And The Dominos, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Winter, Dylan, Led Zep, Black Sabbath, BB - Allbert - Freddie King. In fact Yer combines 70's Hard Rock, 60's Rock and Blues together to a great sound. First Of Many Others is an album with some great variety, from Heavy to Psychedelic, from Blues to Mellow. If you like some Retro stuff, then this is your thing. Enjoy.

2008 has been kinda a “Sargent Peppers Lonely time” for YER. Since Yer..s debut Ep in 2005, they had played and grown as a band, going deeply inside their heart and soul, searching for breath moment off the stage, that kind of nirvana insight as keruac on the Mountains with his devils had and mad about. Sort of things that make us a better human been; seen, listen, feeling the movement of the world.
As a trio, the difficult to assimilate and express all the contemporary rock style make they go into their own studio, call it simple “Power of Soul” that meaning it self.
That was the last thing missing for Yer, free time rolling songs, tracking fields, mixing their own songs like their idols Eddie Kramer, Glyn and Andy johns bros, Tom Dowd and much more mates. Having a really good times, as the golden years when Traffic had composed songs in a small cottage in rural Berkshire or when The Band did the same, living in Woodstock.
Now Yer just become the own self intuitive feelings, putting they selves all together without any misunderstanding and block of the big bosses, and this is not what you going to find around, because Yer is what they are, simple a Power of Soul, making good, strange, wrong and maybe confuse songs, things they are shitin.. off for the bloody wankers, because this is pure. If it will be good, is your decision, because they are far away on the mountains of south Brazil….. cheers!!!

London..s air has ever been the “wicked place” for rock..n..roll, you know, and was there that Fabiano Koeche de Melo completed his mastership in rock, blues and psychedelic feelings. After two years walking around the Queen..s land , Fabiano has backed to south Brazil and in 2005 recruited his younger brother Mauricio (bass) and the old friend Guilherme Pitt (drums) to form a band. The most talented power trio from that area. Here you can appreciate the first Yer..s EP, called “Cheers Mate!” Melting amps in a full pelt performance with a old fashion style is quite rare to find out on the rock arena on this days, loud guitar bends with a les paul through a marshall amps, hard beats rhythm on drums and a big and strong bass lines that could make mrs Bruce and Bogert cry of jealously – yeah mate, that..s a real rule for Yer, just make a kind of Blues / Rock with the “old smell” without lose the 90..s energy.

Mother Superior is a L.A. based Hard Rock trio and this is their eighth album. These guys are famous for their work with Henry Rollins.
Moanin' is a great Hard Rock album with some Stoner and 70's influences. Some songs are raw as hell and others more subdued. This album has an excellent sound. One of my favorite songs is A Hole, a right in your face Rock 'n' Roll song. And the last track Jack The Ripper is a kick-ass song. Moanin' is great! Enjoy!

Japanese Instrumental Stoner Rock.

This is some great stuff from Japan! Sonic Flower was a side project of Church Of Misery and they play some awesome Instrumental Stoner Rock with 70's Hard Rock influences. The fuzz riffs are huge and there are a lot of great rhythms and grooves on this album. These guys play so cool, I think every Stoner Rock minded will enjoy this!

"Sonic Flower from Japan featuring Church of Misery members is a great stonerrific guitar rock instrumental outfit on par with bands like Atomic Bitchwax and Elternal Elysium as far as shredding guitar tone and riffs go."

"I will come out and say this much, if you are a fan of early Monster Magnet, Ed Mundell, or Eternal Elysium; then chances are you are going to love this great, but cut short IMO CD. Many Stoner bands say that they are influenced by Thin Lizzy, so I put up their best album: Jailbreak.
When I was about 14/15 years old I listened to this album a lot. It changed my view at music in those days. I think Jailbreak is one of the best Hard Rock albums ever!
There are so many great songs on on this album like Jailbreak, Warriors (Threatening), Cowboy Song, Emerald (One of the best) and Angel From The Coast (One guitar starts a mighty riff and then the second guitar sets in. It's awesome and makes me shiver). If you're not familiar with this album, download it and enjoy!

I said elswhere on this site that Thin Lizzy invented twin guitar heavy metal, and while that may be a big call to make in light of the fact that Sad Wings of Destiny by Judas Priest came out on almost exactly the same day as this album, I stand by it. One listen to the closing track on this 1976 masterpiece should just about remove any doubt: "Emerald" is the prototype for all Iron Maiden songs, twin guitar melodies and criss-crossing lead breaks building to a crescendo of epic proportions. You can almost picture Steve Harris listening to this and saying, "That's what I want my band to sound like!"

Thin Lizzy made some great records but Jailbreak is possibly their greatest. Every song on here is a deadset gem, a testament to the abilities of the band and the sheer power of Phil Lynott's songwriting genius. His lyrics are evocative and detailed, like the story-telling poety of Dylan or Springsteen and he sings them in a richly resonant, velvety smooth voice that occasionally sounds like a lucid Hendrix. This album may be remembered mostly by many for the brilliant "The Boys Are Back in Town" with its vivid depiction of delinquent nightlife, but trying to find a track here that doesn't match it is virtually impossible. Lynott's almost seductive singing is offset by thunderously heavy riffing and the interplay of Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham, a team that, as mentioned, set the benchmark for dual-guitar rock that Maiden, Priest, Saxon and even Def Leppard would later mimic. It's a sublime and compelling combination, put together in a way that has never quite been matched.

For some reason, Jailbreak doesn't seem to enjoy the same level of regard these days as some of more illustrious releases from that year (and let's face it, there was some great ones: Sad Wings, Dirty Deeds, Dreamboat Annie, Destroyer, 2112) but metal may have never sounded quite the way it does without it.

Punk Influenced Stoner From The U.K.

Southbound n' Supercharged is the debut album of the U.K. based Master Charger.

Master Charger plays a mix of Stoner Rock, Punk, Metal, Doom and 70's Hard Rock. They combine these styles very well, but in my opinion the main point is Stoner Doom. The three (!) guitars are real fuzz canons. The rhythms are great and these guys know how to write good songs! I really recommend this album! Enjoy and give Master Charger some support!

Master Charger formed in the summer of 2006. Hailing from Nottinghamshire UK. The band features members from the cult British death metal band Evoke, Ambient experimental sludge doomsters See it Burn and the then crustcore legends Intense Degree. Initially Master Charger began life as a three piece until 2008 when they recruited a second guitarist. Influenced by a wide range of music. Fusing 70's Rock with Punk / Metal tinges and throwing in a psychedelic twist mixed with downtuned monster grooves provides an overall raw Rock N' Roll feel. The band began to jam ideas and quickly found that they had enough material to record an album, the debut album is now completed and is entitled "Southbound N' Supercharged", Master Charger plan to play live very soon once the album is released and hope to target a whole range of audiences with their retro but yet fresh modern sound and approach to heavy music.

El Diablo is a Mexican Stoner/Hard Rock band with strong 70's vibes. These guys are pretty good. A singer with a great voice and singing in English, cool fuzz guitars and a nice rhythm section. El Diablo made six albums (I guess). Paradise Mescaline is one of them. On their MySpace they claimed to be influenced by the Following:Black Sabbath, Blind Faith, Grand Funk, Ten Years After, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Corporation, Gong, King Crimson, Miles Davis, Guru Guru, Van Der Graaf Generator, The Plastic People Of The Universe, Magma, The Mars Volta, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin.
