Killimanjaro is a new power trio from Barcelos, Portugal. This band plays energetic Heavy Rock with Stoner and Seventies influences.

Today is the release of their same titled debut EP. This EP contains seven awesome tracks. The power of Killimanjaro are the freaky bass and drum patterns in combination with stunning fuzz guitar. The singer of this band has a great voice that fits the music well.

Underdogs is an italian trio that plays some superb Stoner Rock with Psychedelic, Seventies and Grunge elements. According to their Facebook page is this band influenced by the following bands and artists: Kyuss, Queens Of The StoneAge, Ramones, Fu Manchu, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Led Zeppelin, Danzig, Helmet, Melvins, Motorpsycho, Stone Temple Pilots, Brant Bjork, Alfredo Hernandez, Joe Lalli and Vic Dumonte.

Revolution Love is their third release after the debut Ready To Burn and the unplugged EP Dogs Without Plugs. (This EP is available as free download on their MySpace page.)

Revolution Love is a nice collection of songs that goes from energetic and up-tempo to some more laid-back.

As rock bands evolve and develop a more technical and refined sound, it becomes increasingly necessary to sonically "strike hard and fast" and leave your listener "hooked and begging for more. Enter UNDERDOGS.

Powerful and versatile trio inspired by the "desert rock", supported by GoDown Records and formed in 2004.

They already occupy a respectable place in the Italian underground, thanks to a lot of granitic & wild r'n'roll gigs all over Italy (and not only..), supporting international cult bands such as Nebula, Josiah, Colour Haze, OJM, Joe Lalli (Fugazi), The Answer, Brant Bjork (Kyuss), and many more!!

The lucky debut album "Ready to burn" was released in 2007 for GoDown Records, followed in 2009 by an E.P. unplugged "Dogs without plugs" (self-produced and available for free download).

After one year away from the scene for recording the new album & changing drummer, on summer 2011 they are ready to come back and strike again. The new album will be available by september 2011..

Woolly Bullet

Let's start with a funny fact. The last name of the keyboard player of this band is Blowen. Well, blowen is the dutch word for smoking pot!
Woolly Bullet is a five piece band from Eliot, Maine, USA (According to Bandcamp and ReverbNation) or from Dover, New Hampshire, USA (According to Facebook). This band plays some great Stoner Rock that is heavily inspired by seventies Rock music. According to their Facebook page, Woolly Bullet is influenced by the following: The Dead Weather, Led Zeppelin, Say ZuZu, Swamp Yankee, One Hand Free, Jon Nolan and the Working Class Girls, etc.
The result is this magnificent free to download self-titled debut album. These guys know how to play some great music. The songs are mostly instrumental. Some songs have a bit of Space Rock, because of the organ. (Mr. Blowen is doing a real excellent job!)
All in all, this is a formidable album that definitely deserves a listen. Enjoy!

So, I (Dave Nebbia) decided to do an RPM Challenge in 2011... I was determined! The last attempt turned into something special and never got released, it was the launch and birth of Swamp Yankee.
This year, I wanted to get some player I have never played with before and try to put together some magic. So, I contacted Jon Nolan and then we added Geoff Taylor on Bass from One Hand Free, Andrew Blowen on Organ Piano and Synth, and then Jon McCormack on Guitar and Bass. I played all the drums and sang on a few of the tunes. That was the idea.
I started to collect melodies by me humming on my iPhone... bits of verses and choruses and whatever other melody I thought might get us going.
We all show up on a Sunday night at 6PM, get rolling at 8PM and start recording at about 9:30PM. I took my iPhone melodies and sat with JonMC and he transposed them into guitar and we were off and running. 2 hours later, we had 3 tunes. We then show up the next night at 6:00PM and within 7 hours have all 10 tunes done! We had our friend Jamie Biscomb sing on one tune and do back ups on another. Boom, DONE! Hope you like what came out!

Goodbye Orange Sunshine, Hello Santa Cruz

Orange Sunshine is the most famous Fuzz band from The Hague, Holland. This trio has performed their last show at the Gods Of Groove fest last saturday. Yeah, that's right, Orange Sunshine will stop existing. But don't be sad. Some members will continue in the new band Santa Cruz. Now back to Orange Sunshine. This band made four full-lenght albums and they're all awesome. This is their second album called Love=Acid Space=Hell and it is full of great Fuzz/60's/70's/Garage/Hard Rock songs. The major influence of Orange Sunshine is Blue Cheer. of The Hague/Den Haag and Cromlech from Arnhem, check out www.motorwolf.nl for more information), Orange Sunshine started in a squat in The Hague early 1999 as a traditional 3-piece power blues band playing a mix of blues covers and originals in a very explosive way, in the very same intense way and with the very same raw sound and the very same high volume as the much inspiring power blues bands BLUE CHEER, MC5 and STACKWADDY once did in the late '60's, rendering, or should we say screaming out, the same pain, the same drugs (LSD, amphetamines, opiates), the same tension and the same soul.

Many shows followed, in many squats and bars, parties and youth centres, regular venues and main concert halls, in the Netherlands and abroad, a first record was expected and so we plunged into our own analogue recording studio in the squat where we also lived and rehearsed.

We always worshipped the music and the sound of BLUE CHEER's first 2 albums and to make sure we got as close as possible to their organic energy and exhilarating dynamics, we decided to do the recording ourselves, using authentic valve amplifiers and cabinets (Fender bassman, ampeg SVT), drums (Rogers), effects (a.o. spring reverb, tape echo, Electric Mistress flanger, Big Muff and Avora fuzz), an old 1" tape recorder and an old mixing console, and authentic recording techniques i.e. recording the space around us, instead of the modern-day close-micing with tons of compressors, gates and digital multi-effects. When the volume is so up, that the air turns into french cheese, you better register that french cheese instead of all the separate instruments that are used. The source has to be pure, but it's the flow that one records! Thus 'Homo Erectus' was produced and released on our own record label Motorwolf records by the end of the year 2001.
A sincere tribute to the sheer ritual drug that is the early music of BLUE CHEER and with the self-made 3D sleeve (a photograph of a gospel preaching freak messiah and his guitar God apostles on a German second-world-war tank) and the enclosed self-made Gibson- flying-V-shaped 3D glasses the record (limited to 500 vinyl copies) was sold out in half a year, you bet how eagerly all these record collectioneurs wanted to buy our bullshit story of the excavated acetate from an obscure '60's group. 2002 saw new opportunities for the band with a new bass player (Mischa Poppe) and a first small eastcoast/mid-west US tour. Very soon our sound and music began to evolve with the new band member and our new SUNN amplification (the ultimate howlin' and growlin' tube machines!), developing more into the black roots of rock'n'roll and rhythm'n'blues of CHUCK BERRY, BO DIDLEY and HENDRIX (the music we listened to as kids), while at the same time growing more into the CREAM-like pop song structures of the psychedelic '60's, but without losing the heavy rock aggression and wildness of our original set-up. Therefore we wanted another recording style for our second album release 'Love = Acid, Space = Hell' (recorded in our Motorwolf studio and released on Motorwolf records in 2003), more sort of like a 'professional' studio recording from around 1970 (perhaps even just as the old ROLLING STONES sounded on their records at the time), with all the limitations of that era (no computers, only an 8-track tape recorder, old-school condenser microphones, no digital mastering), resulting in a very warm sound, yet with a much more 'produced' production than 'Homo Erectus'. The hilarious 8-minutes drum solo (probably the first on a record in more than 25 years) and the over-the-top space-echo-laden and reverse-tape-recorded guitars and drums in our version of BO DIDLEY's 'hey mama, keep your big mouth shut' certainly add to the distinct and long gone psych/progrock feel of the record. A second small eastcoast US tour was done in december 2003 and very soon our fresh release, which had far better distribution now, was well received throughout the world. And while we are currently working on a lot of completely new material, a small German tour has been done around christmas 2004, a 7" is released on Germany's Swamp Room records at the same time (feat. a re-interpretation of the FUZZTONES' song 'Black-out') and our debut album 'Homo Erectus' is rereleased (with 2 previously unreleased bonus tracks) on cd by Holland's Clear Spot/Headspin records and on vinyl and cd by Japan's Leaf Hound records in the beginning of 2005. 2005 started great with holland's prominent 'roadburn' festival, but just before the 'stoned for the underground' festival in erfurt, germany, our bass player Mischa had to quit the band due to serious ear damage! Our friend Antal Buisman from the Zippies helped us out on bass for a few shows in the summer and autumn of 2005, but we're finally back with a new bassplayer: Mehdi Rouchiche, former guitar player of The Hague's old-school HC sensation Shorttime and graphic designer of Godspill, and we're closer to the old BLUE CHEER sound than ever before! However, we will still record an new album with Mischa Poppe and perform his last Orange Sunshine shows in Japan in 2006. Further plans for 2006 are a french/italian/swiss/german tour, 'Black-out' on the coming 'The Hague Motor Rock Vol.2' compilation by Motorwolf and the final release of the never released album 'Ruler of the Universe' (on vinyl by Motorwolf and on cd by Leaf Hound records), named after the 15-minutes long epic space psych track from Terry Brooke's Strange that we cover on the A-side (including sitar, tablas, crazy sectarian-cult-choir-like vocals and lots of endless manic soloing with a self-oscillating echo device). This album was produced while we recorded for the 'Homo Erectus' LP (with our former bass player Thomas van Slooten, who is now taking care of all the coming album artwork), during our 'psychedelic freak-out' sessions. And excessive heavy acid fuzz madness it is! Definitely the wildest, craziest and most extreme stuff we have ever done, of which one track ('Balls knocking') was previously released in early 2002 on the first volume of Motorwolf's 'The Hague Motor Rock', a compilation of 25 heavy garage-/surf-/punk-/ acid-/doom-/hard-rock bands from our metro area.
A fourth LP (as said before with Mischa Poppe) is also planned with a further development of our music, expanding into the styles of the early '70's, with subtle elements of black soul, gospel and funk (FUNKADELIC, SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE, CURTIS KNIGHT, GRAND FUNK), jazz (i.e. boogie, GEORGE BRIGMAN's style of melodic soloing), proto-doom hardrock (RANDY HOLDEN's POPULATION II) and even some techniques from Latin-American progrock groups (LOS DUG-DUG'S from Mexico, PAPPO'S BLUES from Argentina). Will we stick to our original principles or will we fall into the same trap as lots of heavy bands did during those dreadful 1970's?
The irony of this all is that we actually hate cliche blues rock, hippy space rock and other lame cannabis-influenced 'psychedelia', and all these terribly pretentious and technical progressive/kraut rock bands from the '70's (flutes!), you can imagine lots of people had a bloody good reason to ignite the punk virus! Thank the lord for the bad-acid-trip drug rock magnet that inflamed many a good band, 'damn you hippies, we still got our music!

Black Nasa is another band from Chris Kosnik (Atomic Bitchwax). This trio plays some excellent Stoner Rock with 70's influences. Black Nasa has released two great albums. This one is their self-titled debut album. It contains awesome tracks like: Holy Crap, You Don't Have To Hide, Diamond Girl, Walkin, Talkin Blackout Mode and the absolute fantastic Monkey Knife Fight. In short: Black Nasa plays some recommendable music! Enjoy!

While being the active guitarist for Atomic Bitchwax, bassist/vocalist Chris Kosnik turned his attention to his other on-going project, Black Nasa - yet another New Jersey based stoner rock power trio. However, unlike the Bitchwax, which specialized in highly virtuosic psychedelic space rock, Kosnik and his new cohorts - guitarist Duane Hutter and drummer Corey Stubblefield - prefer a far more restrained and straightforward hard rock approach. Focusing on band interplay and groove-based riffs rather than individual flights of fancy or frenetic leads, the band’s eponymous debut features similarities to contemporary outfits like Fu Manchu and Orange Goblin, as well as classic hard rock reference points from the 70s.

Great Spanish Stoner Rock.

Viaje A 800 is a band from the beautiful Spanish region Andalucia. This region is famous for the Flamenco music. Viaje A 800 has nothing to do with that. Viaje A 800 plays a combination of Stoner Rock, Psychedelic and 70's Hard rock. Their MySpace says that Viaje A 800 is influenced by the following: Black Sabbath, Hawkwind, Groundhogs, Hendrix, Melvins, Greg Sage & The Wipers, Triana, Smash, Alice In Chains, Buffalo, Virgenes Adolescentes, Pink Floyd, Randy Holden, The Beatles, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Grand Funk Railroad, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Pentagram, Soundgarden, The Misfits, Saint Vitus, Warrior Soul, Kyuss, Triquinoise Producciones, Chapa Discos, Acerinox, Cepsa, Celupal(D.E.P.), etc...

This Is The Beginning

Mat Bethancourt is a man who got famous with the bands Josiah and The Kings Of Frog Island. He also played with the bands Cherry Choke and The Beginning.
The Beginning was a five piece band from the U.K. This band is more focused on the 60's and 70's Psychedelic music. The album This Is The Beginning contains seven outstanding songs. Great songs are The Ju Ju Man and the 13 minute Baby's Takin Me For A Ride (I would almost swear that Keith Richards played here). This Is The Beginning is an album with great grooves and it shows again the midas touch of Mat Bethancourt. Too bad it stayed with one album. Enjoy!

The Beginning were born of a heavy consumption of psychedelics and late sixties/early seventies drug rock culture from both sides of the pond. The Ugliest Band In The World... THE MUGGS

The Muggs is a great three piece Stoner band from Detroit. There are some simultaneities with another awesome band from Detroit: 500 Ft. Of Pipe. Both bands have the same line-up (Guitar, keys and drums) and play both some great Stoner Rock. The Muggs are more Bluesy and have more 70's vibe. This album is their 2005 debut, the second is called On With The Show from 2008. That they are The Ugliest Band In The World? Well, who cares about that! Enjoy!

The power trio is not a term to be used lightly -- for every Blue Cheer there's a blink-182 -- but when it's applied to the electrifying cacophony emitted by the Muggs, it's almost not enough. The Detroit-based threesome is a power trio the way that Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath were -- Robert Plant and Ozzy are cultural icons, but it's what went on behind them that launched a million rock bands. Muggs guitarist Danny Methric's solos transcend the blues that spawned them by sneaking out of their major and minor trajectories without a care in the world, while drummer Matt Rost and bass player Tony DeNardo -- the latter switched to the lower register on a Fender Rhodes after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke in 2001 that left his right side paralyzed -- sound as if they're joined at the shoulders. This is stadium rock trapped in a club and looking for a way out with every intention of burning the roof down -- not in a Great White kind of way -- that brings to mind '70s classic rock like AC/DC, Humble Pie, and Mountain. What sets the Muggs apart from questionable blues-rock revivalists like the Kings of Leon is their complete lack of pretense. Perfectly rendered guitar rock is at its essence the simple practice of fusing together a bass and guitar lead that jumps into the pit of your stomach and stays there, something the Muggs have obviously mastered on standout cuts like "Need Ya Baby," "Monster," and the Hammond-driven "Hard Love," but they're not above taking the listener through a space rock mid-section that owes more to Piper at the Gates of Dawn-era Pink Floyd than it does Ten Years After. It's that perfectly balanced allegiance to both discipline -- these gentlemen are obviously no strangers to the rehearsal room -- and balls-out rock & roll hedonism that makes this self-titled debut, when inserted into the medium of your choice, turn up all by itself.

Another Proof That Sweden Is The Place To Be For Great Stoner Rock.

Sideburn is a Swedish Stoner Rock band with huge 70's Hard Rock influences. The Newborn Sun is their second album. This is really great stuff! Sideburn play their songs very well. I like this sound that's completed with an organ. According to their mySpace Sideburn is influenced by the following: Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Ufo, The Cult, MSG, Badlands, The Tea Party, Blue Murder, Spiritual Beggars, Whitesnake, Rising Force, Soundgarden, Scorpions, Rush, Tool, Goatsnake, Kansas, Uriah Heep, Europe, Church Of Misery, Kyuss and many more.

So you know what you're dealing with! Enjoy!

There's probably some sort of correlation between the title of Sideburn's sophomore album and that of their 2002 debut, Trying to Burn the Sun. Perhaps in the five years between albums they managed to complete the task and are now celebrating the rise of a new gaseous orb. Perhaps it's more metaphorical, that the band, no longer dormant and with a new drummer, is reinvigorated and ready to once again take on the world. Perhaps this album is the second in a trilogy of star-related albums, with The Sun Sets on the Rising Son to follow in 2012.

Of those three, the second's the most likely, and had I managed to nab a copy of Trying to Burn the Sun, I could work with it. As it stands, however, The Newborn Sun is all I know of this Swedish four-piece. I do know that most bands from that region fall easily in the "sounds like Kyuss" category (for better or for worse), but Sideburn sidesteps that and instead chases the '70's arena gods – Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin predominantly, but you can pick up scant traces of Uriah Heep and Mountain here and there as well. Given the current year and the band's age, it's not surprising that Sideburn's take on that s t y l e is also fairly bombastic - they obviously spent some time enthralled with '80's metal before reaching back to the previous decade for inspiration.

For some, that may come off as a bit too heavy-handed, but what Sideburn did most is remind me of Badlands, the '80's band that confused a legion of head bangers when they tried to play heavy music that traded flash pots and fog machines for bluesy riffs and soulful singing. So if you've got fond memories of that Ray Gillen/Jake E. Lee project (or enjoy more current bands like The Quill or the short-lived The Moon), this Sun's for you.

Almost a year ago I posted a video clip of the Psychedelic Sixties Rockers called DeWolff. At that time these guys were aged 14 - 17. Now a year later these fellows are still quite young.
DeWolff released their full length debut album now. Strange Fruits And Undiscovered Plants is a very great album. It's like the sixties have never been away. The Hammond sounds incredible. The drums are much like Ian Paice style. The guitar is cool, don't expect Heavy Fuzz, but it's still great. You don't think the singer is that young, he has a very grown up voice. All with all a very great album. This is one of the major surprises of 2009.
I'm glad I cought this on vinyl. You should also do that. Enjoy and if you like this stuff, go get yourself one here!

DeWolff is a three-headed rockmonster that crawled right out of the Mississippimud to shake, rattle and roll the world with some raw, psychedelic sixtiesbluesrock. Armed with a screaming Hammond-organ, a muddy, howling guitar, thunderous drums and a soulful voice, these three Wolf men take you back to those wonderful 60’s and 70’s, when bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple ruled the world of rock ‘n’ roll.

DeWolff was founded in 2007 in a town in the Southern part of the Netherlands (Limburg) called Geleen and consists of Pablo van de Poel, brother Luka van de Poel and Robin Piso. On the 5th of July 2008, DeWolff won the final rounds of Kunstbende. DeWolff was the first band in Kunstbende-history on which the jury had no remarks at all!

DeWolff is an absolute live-sensation: their partly-improvised songs sometimes last more than 15 minutes! It’s got style, it plays loud and it plays with soul and passion: that’s DeWolff!

A Dutch Legend: Q65

Q65 from The Hague, Holland was one of the first Nederbeat bands. They got famous with the single The Life I Live.
The Singer Wim Bieler sung in English with a very heavy The Hague accent, he died in the year 2000.

The Den Haag (The Hague) group Q '65 played raw garage-style music and was often compared for that with their English counterparts, Pretty Things. Remarkable, however, was the singer's voice, who never learned to pronounce English words properly, which resulted in some really amusing-sounding output on their records. Other notable affairs of the group were, amongst others, their stunt of sailing to England by a rubber boat, and also how they often managed to hang halfway over the loudspeaker boxes, in order to keep themselves from falling over. Sometimes, in concert, Peter Vink sat down on the stage, playing as if he was stoned! Apart from that, it must be noted that their first record was the very first production of Peter Koelewijn.

An Australian Classic: BUFFALO

I bought this one at Roadburn 2007, thought I was dealing with Buffalo from Argentinia. So it was a surprise it was a seventies classic from Australia. I had to listen to it several times before I concluded that Volcanic Rock really is a great album!

In a genre hardly recognized for its finesse, Buffalo's second album, 1973's aptly titled Volcanic Rock, was about as raw as heavy metal got in the early 1970s (and its cover art's barely concealed eroticism sparked a controversy all its own, but that's another story). Of course, as those well versed in matters of hard rock and metal well know, all of its crudity was absolutely intentional. This seeming contradiction is both epitomized and explained by the Sydney, Australia combo's signature single, "Sunrise (Come My Way)," which boasted unquestionable melodic sensibility and expertly dangled hooks beneath the coarse leather surface of guitarist's John Baxter's earth-rumbling fuzz distortion, and singer Dave Tice's simultaneously warm, soulful, and, when needed, borderline ragged voice. Next track, "Freedom," pays peremptory lip service to the "think big" mentality of then ultra-popular progressive rock (and the band's prog-loving label, Vertigo), but never succumbs to the genre's arrogant self-indulgence. Rather, much as they do on the mostly improvised studio jams "Till My Death" and "The Prophet," the rhythm section of bassist Pete Wells (later of Rose Tattoo) and drummer Jimmy Economu plants its hooves into honest, proletarian blues-rock mud and stays put. Actually, the mid-album vibe almost gets too basic and laid-back come the unremarkable "Pound of Flesh," but any serious concerns are quickly crushed under the stampeding, LP-closing eruption of "Shylock," which introduces Shakespeare to Black Sabbath by way of Budgie and Steppenwolf) and brings Volcanic Rock's most distinctive and powerful qualities full circle for an explosive finale. And, as had originally been instructed on their debut album before being reiterated here, Buffalo's peculiar brand of Volcanic Rock achieved best results when played even louder. [Volcanic Rock's 2006 reissue by Aztec Records resurrected long lost original album artwork for its handsome digipack, included comprehensive liner notes, and added two bonus tracks: the single edit of "Sunrise" and a live version of "Shylock," making it the definitive collectors' edition.]
