Stoner From Moscow: DIRTY SEASON

First I like to wish everybody a great 2010!
Looking back at 2009, I can say it was a good year with many great releases. So is this EP from Dirty Season. The singer of this band is Stas. This guy also sings and plays guitar in Cactus Jumper (I posted them before here). Dirty Season plays a great form of fuzz driven Stoner Rock. Many up-tempo parts. The voice of Stas is great, a bit like James Hetfield. (And maybe even better!!!). This EP contains a nice Alice In Chains cover.
So these are my last words for 2009. See you back next year! Enjoy!

This will probably my last post this year, so I want to wish you all a happy and especially a stoned and drunk Christmas!

I posted this split album earlier before here. I post it again cause I think it's a very great Stoner split.

Our Ceasing Voice

Our Ceasing Voice is a Post Rock band from Tirol, Austria. This band plays music that is dejected, experimental and atmospheric. It reminds some how of Red Sparowes. The Steadied Stars In The Morphium Sky EP is originally a four track EP, but this special edition contains four additional tracks. This nice EP is for those who like some depressive tunes. Enjoy in despair! Support Our Ceasing Voice!
Thanx to the one who dropped this in the C-Box!

In the middle of the Austrian Alps, post-rock quartett Our Ceasing Voice was founded in late 2006. To achieve their depressing, yet incomprehensibly beautiful sound, Our Ceasing Voice utilizes the perfect blend between hypnotizing ambient and epic outbursts soaking with melancholia.

Buddha In Space.

Buddha Sentenza is a Instrumental Kraut Rock band from Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Mode 0909 is the debut EP of this band. Buddha Sentenza combines Space Rock with Psychedelics and they do that outstanding! The sound of this EP is awesome. Each instrument sounds great and it fits all together. I love this kind of Space Rock, it's experimental and atmospheric. So please Buddha Sentenza, record more music like this! Enjoy and support Buddha Sentenza!
(Thanks to Tom from Buddha Sentenza for sending me this great EP!)

"After a seemingly random sonic collision over the city of Heidelberg in late 2008, the constellation of *Buddha Sentenza* began to form during the darkest hours of that cold and silent winter. Deep under the earth, in the hidden bowels of the Klonlabor tunnel complex, the searing strings and pounding drums condensed rapidly to form a nebulous cloud of loosely jammed, spaced-out, rocking riffs. Rotating freely around some of the most ancient soundscapes - from the astral end of the Pink Floyd to the depths of galaxies such as Black Sabbath - Buddha Sentenza has continued to expand, drawing energy from contemporary constellations as well. Thus, its elements follow the trail of early rock psychonauts and modern riffrockers alike, fusing droning riffs, screaming solos and cosmic harmonies into an instrumental sound experience that defies any strict genre boundaries. The result is a texture that combines the raw massiveness of rock with the infinite possibilities of outer space."

Awesome Stoner From Germany!

Thanks to the guys at Planetfuzz for publishing this damn fine EP!
Smokin Engine' is a German Stoner Rock band as Stoner Rock should be: Fuzz guitars, Desert sound and a good singer. The only thing Smokin Engine' don't have is a bass player. But I don't miss one.
This EP is a great example of good Stoner. Enjoy and give these guys some support!

Hailing from Dresden, Germany these 3 fuzz cats produce a style of rock that could fall into many genres! Think Grunge meets psychedelic raw garage. Fans of Fu Manchu, Electric Wizard and Orange Goblin should get a kick out of these guys. Although still young and fresh to the fuzz scene these guys though gigs and playing with many more bands will without doubt be someone to look out for in the future.
Highly recommended!

Croatian Stoner Rock.

Thanks the Leo from the band She Loves Pablo for sending me their great album!
She Loves Pablo is a Stoner band from Zagreb, Croatia. This band play some excellent nice-to-hear Stoner Rock with great fuzz. It wouldn't surprise me that She Loves Pablo will become a famous band. These are real friendly tunes here. I think you all love it. Enjoy!

She Loves Pablo is a three-piece band from Zagreb, Croatia. Started in late 2005. as a stoner-rock duo (Domagoj – guitars/vocals, Leo – drums), the band immediately recorded its first demo, entitled simply «She Loves Pablo». They played their first dozen shows in and around their hometown, sneaking into the Croatian stoner scene which was rapidly growing at the time, and is now kicking ass with amazing bands such as Ruiz, Cojones, Stonebride, Umor, Toro, and «Sonic Doom Records», an indie label making it all easier. In 2006. the band recorded their second CD, an EP entitled «Country Home», where they experimented with a different, more radio-friendly sound. The following year was a year of change. Hrvoje (bass) joined in, adding that low-frequency ass-kicking which was missing. This gave the band room to experiment and to step away from the stoner-rock stereotypes, combining blues influences with a massive, psychedelic groove.
The band's debut album, «Mother Of All» was recorded and self-released in 2009. It contains 10 tracks from almost every era of the band, and beautifully sums up the work of She Loves Pablo.

Sludgy Punk: CANYONS.

What do we've got here? An angry and heavy sounding band with a singer who's screaming his lungs out. I like that!
Canyons from Kansas City / Marshall, Missouri, U.S.A. plays a combination of Punk/Hardcore and Sludge. And these guys do that very well. When I listen to The Rufus EP I can feel their rage. But... Who the fuck is Rufus? Enjoy!
(Thanx to Canyon for dropping this in my C-Box!)

Canyons is four guys Loud amps and ooh that smell.
Rufus is the party.
Since day one of the CanyonsHouse house shows, Rufus has mingled with touring bands from all over and we've all had a blast.
We wanted to immortalize Rufus in song. So we did. We are in the middle of some projects and realized we had songs we still play live that never saw a real release.
If anything we've written so far deserves a single... it's Rufus.
That being decided we picked two songs to cover to throw with the old and new songs then visited UTG studios on Halloween.
The purpose of this ep is to raise Rufus Robinson awareness. That and to let people know Canyons wants to party.

Hungarian Stoner: STARDRIVE.

A special thanks to Anders for sending me these albums!
Stardrive is a Hungarian Stoner/Hard Rock band and they play it very well. Stardrive has it all: Great riffs and good songs. Sometimes it reminds me a bit of Spiritual Beggars. (Without the organ!) I guess all Stoner lovers will appreciate Stardrive. Enjoy!
(Anders, thanx again for turning me into this one!)

In 2001 three ordinary musicians from the Hungarian heartlands rent a freaky, little basement near by the Karcag City Hall. The unnamed project started to put together some songs just for fun, simply killing time. After a while a bunch of new stuff came out from their hands, and they started to put more energy into the project. Their music sounded like Cluth, Fu Manchu, or other similar bands from the stoner rock scene. Finally Csaba Cselényi (vocals/guitar) offered Zoltan Mulicz (Vale Of Tears guitarrist) to join the band. Mulicz brought his heavier influences like Pantera, Down, Spiritual Beggars or even Crowbar and this kind a fusion between Cselényi and him pushed the project into another direction. (At this time still without a name.)

In 2002 they fired the rhythm section, and the former Vale Of Tears drummer Zoltán Vass showed up in the band which got the name: Stardrive. New songs became thicker and harder, but still not heavy metal and not really stoner rock either. Probably it is on the edge, like COC, or Spiritual Beggars. The band played it’s first show in November of 2003 at the Karcag Youth Club. From this time the Stardrive started to play all over the country, and in 2005 they recorded the first album Rust which has been released in 2006 by the Hungarian Nail Records and the Austrian PsycheDoomelic Records.
In December of 2005 Stardrive found the right bass player. Sándor Papp always used to be around, but for some reason Cselényi and Mulicz never counted on him as a band member. Finally Vass asked him to join the group and Papp instantly said “yes”. 2006 was a perfect year touring with the first album, and write some new stuff for the next one. They had great shows with many other bands. Stardrive opened for Wall Of Sleep, Stereochist, played with Cheef Rebel Angel, Shapat Terror, Vale Of Tears, Remorse and had a good afternoon on the Sziget Festival (Rockinform stage).
In 2007 lots of new songs had in their pocket but Vass has left the band because of family reasons. (Married, and bought a guitar.) Two new members arrived to the group: the new drummer Pál Fazekas from Vale Of Tears, and a former Dying Wish guitarist Sándor Ács. (Cselényi wanted to put more focus on the vocal parts.) The strongest line-up developed at this time. (Cselényi – vocals, Mulicz – guitar, Ács – guitar, Papp – bass, Fazekas – drums) The spring of 2008 spent with few shows, but from June they moved back to that old freaky basement to finish up the new album. The second release, "Kings And Slaves", came out in august of 2009 by Psychedoomelic/HMP.
And the band keeps going on its own way...

Sinister Acid.

Thanx to Manual Zombie for sending their album!
Manual Zombie is a Psychedelic Rock band from New York, U.S.A. On their MySpace they claimed to be influenced by the following: Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, The Velvet Underground, Black Flag, Blue Cheer, Argento and Goblin, Jefferson Airplane, Hawkwind, The Misfits, Neil Young, Skinny Puppy, The 13th Floor Elevators, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Bad Brains, Black Sabbath, Cream, The Stones, John Carpenter.
I think Autumn is a great album. There's a sinister feeling on it and I like that. Normally I don't like drum machines, but on this album it sounds not that bad. The guitar fuzz is awesome. If you like creepy Psychedelic music, than maybe Manual Zombie is your thing. Enjoy!

Mountains Of Blow

Connoisseur is the first album of Mountains Of Blow. This band from Los Angeles, U.S.A. plays Heavy Instrumental Rock with some Sludge and Metal influences. The album contains four tracks with heavy, monotonous and repetitive riffs without getting boring. There's a real drive in this music. I can't really compare this with something. Give it a try and let me know what you think by leaving a comment. Enjoy and support Mountains Of Blow!

I Have Found The Space.

Void Generator comes from Italy and they play an awesome combination of Psychedelic, Space and Stoner Rock. We Have Found The Space is a real great album, in fact: It's a Classic! Read the review below and you understand why I don't want to spend more words on this. It's all written! Enjoy

On Void Generator's Myspace web site they say that the members are all united by a passion for psychedelia, space rock and stoner music. WOW… is that ever apparent from the music on this album! The band is from Rome, Italy and consists of Gabriele Fiori and Gianmarco Lantaffi on guitars, bass & vocals, Massimo Matrone on synthesizers and Maurizio De Angelis on drums. Their first, self-titled album, was released in 2004 (see AI #29) and We Have Found The Space was released this year.

The songs are characterized by hard and heavy metallic space rock 'n roll that brings to mind other contemporary bands like Litmus, First Band From Outerspace and Space Mirrors, but also Black Sabbath and Monster Magnet, and Norwegian psych rockers WE often come to mind. In fact, some of the vocals are a dead ringer for the singer from WE (either Gabriele or Gianmarco). Anyway, it all makes for a deep space rock 'n rolling stoner metallic party in the cosmos. Throughout the album we're slapped around by blazing guitars, a solid rhythm section and trademark space rock electronics, all of which make for a tight and smoking quartet. The band excel at songcraft and cool lyrics, but also at creating that well structured balance between the core song and taking off into space and developing the instrumental segments and really jamming hard.

There's lots of variety on the album too, with the band exploring all sorts of hard rocking stylistic nooks and crannies. And they're not afraid to ease the pace a bit, alternating between lighter spaced out psychedelic segments before taking off hard 'n heavy again. Among the songs that are a bit different and represent a break from the mercury bursting energy is "Millions Stars", an acoustic guitar driven song that is both dreamy and intense, with a powerful space raga groove. "Pale Sun" is, at its core, an acoustic guitar singer-songwriter track… but surrounded by a foreboding, pulsating drone and an overall ethereal vibe. Additional acoustic instruments join in as the song develops and of course the electronics make their way into the mix. And the album closes with "Stefano T. Must Die", a space orchestral symphonic sound collage sort of piece that would be ideal as the soundtrack to an avant-garde sci-fi flick. All very cool tracks that are are very different from the rest of the album but fit in nicely and demonstrate that Void Generator aren't neatly classified and ultimately defy easy description.

But aside from these tracks, Void Generator are all about ass kicking space rock and heavy rocking spaced out stoner psych. Most of the songs are in the 6-8 minute range which for Void Generator seems to be the ideal timeframe for developing their songs but also getting into some tasty instrumental explorations. It may be easy to find analogies for Void Generator's music, but these guys take the styles they love and make it very much their own. I've got We Have Found The Space high on my best of 2006 list. HIGHLY recommended!

Another Swedish Stoner Beauty.

StoneWall Noise Orchestra from Sweden plays some excellent Stoner Rock with 70's influences. This band contains members from Demon Cleaner and Greenleaf. One song on this album is a Demon Cleaner song: Freedom Prize. Vol. 1 is a great album with nice songs. The guitars have a real cool fuzz sound. I would say this album is a must-have! Enjoy!

"If the classic phrase "Listen without distraction" applies to anything it's to music like this. These are kick ass musicians with a great deal of experience that would turn any rocker green with envy. It grooves like a motherfucker in mid-tempo with Singe's voice; warm and huge, dominating the soundscape. This is the kind of music that you play to get a party going, to ride and to cruise to, or just to feel really good. Great melodies, riffage de luxe and big sound. The kind that fits perfectly for outdoor shows. Singe's voice reminds me quite a bit of a young Dave Wyndorf and one can feel an early years Monster Magnet vibe in there. When they pick up the tempo a bit I get a tremendous early Orange Goblin feeling and my foot goes straight through the floor."

Bulgarian Hard Rock 'n' Roll

Thanx to Toshe from Daily Noise Club for sending this three track single.
From Sofia, Bulgaria comes Daily Noise Club. This band combines Rock 'n' Roll with Hard Rock and there are some Stoner traces to hear. I guess the main song on this single is Let Me, but if you ask me the most catchy song is Do You wanna Know. The first time I've heard that song, it sticked in my head for the rest of the day. I hope that these guys will send me more stuff, cause I like it very much! According to their MySpace Daily Noise Club is influenced by the following: Motley Crue, Guns 'n' Roses, Rage Against The Machine, The Cult, Backyard Babies, Faster Pussycat, Dogs D'amour, King's X, Black Crowes, Warrior Soul. So you know what you're dealing with. Enjoy and give these guys some support!

In 1998 four guys from Sofia, Bulgaria started a band and named it Daily Noise Club. Now, 11 years later, lot of club gigs and fest appearances, debut album - "Dirty Dress" (DNC/043) 2002, and a single - "Let Us" (DNC music) 2004, they are still here looking forward! Up to this day Daily Noise Club released their second album "Next Level". They were opening for Megadeth, for their show in Sofia on 20th of June 2005, and also did tours with Soleilnoir (March 2006), Voodoo Healers (October 2007 & April 2008), Green Goblins (May 2009) in Bulgaria and Green Voodoo Noise Tour 2009 (October 2009 with Green Goblins & Voodoo Healers in Greece and Bulgaria).
Playing high energy, passionate and loud rock D.N.C. can always make you fit into the right mood for a jump & shout type of party! This is the feeling they deliver and you get at their shows, proving that rock music is the ultimate time machine, even now in 21st century!

Post Metal From The North Of The Netherlands.

Wow! This is a surprising great promo EP by the Dutch Post Metal band Ortega. This EP contains three songs, there all great. But the song I love the most is The Siren. It's epic, atmospheric, melancholic and raw! I don't want to spend more words on this one, just listen and judge for yourself! Enjoy!

Ortega is a four-piece Post Metal collective from The North of The Netherlands. The band started in 2007 and was created by Richard (No Consent, Sunneater), together with Alex Loots, Frank de Boer(Noir), and Sven Jurgens(That Sunday Smell). After the breakup of a previous band called Wrong End, Richard decided to start his own band. After jamming in an attic for about half a year, The members moved to a rehearsel room to write a full live set.

Four men tell a tale of the sea wich is told in a broad and visual manner. the sound is best described as Dark Post-Metal balanced with spheric soundscapes together with slow and heavy riffs.

After their debut concert in 2008, The band went in the studio for the recording of their first album “1634”. The album was recorded and mixed by JB van der Wal (Dr Doom, Aborted), wich is also known for his work for Asunder, Blood I Bleed, Captain Your Ship is Sinking, Dr Doom, Don’t Mention The War, Escadron, Elexorien, Existence Denied, Grinding Halt, Greyline, Omission, Samaritan, Toxocara and The Hunger

After several months of recording, mixing and mastering a beautiful conceptalbum came out.

The release date for “1634” is January 7th 2010.

JAILBREAK

Many Stoner bands say that they are influenced by Thin Lizzy, so I put up their best album: Jailbreak.
When I was about 14/15 years old I listened to this album a lot. It changed my view at music in those days. I think Jailbreak is one of the best Hard Rock albums ever!
There are so many great songs on on this album like Jailbreak, Warriors (Threatening), Cowboy Song, Emerald (One of the best) and Angel From The Coast (One guitar starts a mighty riff and then the second guitar sets in. It's awesome and makes me shiver). If you're not familiar with this album, download it and enjoy!

I said elswhere on this site that Thin Lizzy invented twin guitar heavy metal, and while that may be a big call to make in light of the fact that Sad Wings of Destiny by Judas Priest came out on almost exactly the same day as this album, I stand by it. One listen to the closing track on this 1976 masterpiece should just about remove any doubt: "Emerald" is the prototype for all Iron Maiden songs, twin guitar melodies and criss-crossing lead breaks building to a crescendo of epic proportions. You can almost picture Steve Harris listening to this and saying, "That's what I want my band to sound like!"

Thin Lizzy made some great records but Jailbreak is possibly their greatest. Every song on here is a deadset gem, a testament to the abilities of the band and the sheer power of Phil Lynott's songwriting genius. His lyrics are evocative and detailed, like the story-telling poety of Dylan or Springsteen and he sings them in a richly resonant, velvety smooth voice that occasionally sounds like a lucid Hendrix. This album may be remembered mostly by many for the brilliant "The Boys Are Back in Town" with its vivid depiction of delinquent nightlife, but trying to find a track here that doesn't match it is virtually impossible. Lynott's almost seductive singing is offset by thunderously heavy riffing and the interplay of Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham, a team that, as mentioned, set the benchmark for dual-guitar rock that Maiden, Priest, Saxon and even Def Leppard would later mimic. It's a sublime and compelling combination, put together in a way that has never quite been matched.

For some reason, Jailbreak doesn't seem to enjoy the same level of regard these days as some of more illustrious releases from that year (and let's face it, there was some great ones: Sad Wings, Dirty Deeds, Dreamboat Annie, Destroyer, 2112) but metal may have never sounded quite the way it does without it.

Hanging Tree

Hanging Tree is a well-known song by the Queens Of The Stone Age. It's also the name of a Stoner Rock band from Limburg, Holland. Hanging Tree does indeed sounds a lot like QOTSA! Even the vocals sounds like Josh H. Take the second song The Red Sun And A Comet From The Sky, here's a very strong Little Sister feel. (Maybe because of the use of the jamblock!)
Don't get me wrong here, I like what these guys are doing here. We have a saying in Holland that says: Better good stolen, than poor cooked up. The Black Shades is still a great EP. You will like it for sure if you're a QOTSA fan. The last track of this EP is the ZZ Top cover Sharp Dressed Man. Enjoy and give this band some support!

Hanging Tree brings you a must see rock 'n roll show that will be long remembered. From heavy guitarrock to catchy choruses that makes you want to sing along, it's all there! Inspired by the likes as Queens of the Stone Age, Velvet Revolver and Led Zeppelin, the band created their own, unique sound which can be best described as stonerblues combined with rock 'n roll. And with former members of Reckless Pilots and INFA you can ensure yourself that this band is one heck of a live experience!

L.A. Based Stoner Hard Rock

Now it's time for me to give someone my gratitude. And that is Anders from Sweden. He visits my blog often and says many times thanx for the stuff he found here by leaving a comment. (What many people should do more!!!).
Now Anders pleases me by dropping this album in the C-Box and my mail.

Night Horse is a Stoner/Hard Rock band from L.A. Their music is heavily influenced by 70's Hard Rock bands like Cactus, Thin Lizzy, Aerosmith and more. Night Horse is a great band 'cause I like this no-nonsense Hard Rock sound. They've great riffs and this album has a very good sound. Enjoy!

Tradition lies deep in the music of Los Angeles rock and roll group NIGHT HORSE, which features members of dirge soundscapists Ancestors and the vocal styling of Sam James Velde, formerly of explorative and adventurous rockers Bluebird. NIGHT HORSE bring a saddle bag full of heavy, raw and riffed-out blues-tinged rock steeped in the likes of John Lee Hooker, Taste, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac and The Allman Brothers Band without a retro stitch. NIGHT HORSE rein in the past with a firm heel in the present, galloping next to such like-minded contemporaries as Harvey Milk, Down and Priestess. Delivering heavy testimonials harnessed with a twin lead guitar assault, NIGHT HORSE join hands with these brothers in arms.

NIGHT HORSE's debut album 'The Dark Won't Hide You' is comprised of 6 sonic hymns, engineered and mixed by Mathias Schneeberger (Sunn 0))), Obsessed, Gutter Twins). The Dark Won't Hide You is out now on Tee Pee Records in the US & UK.

U.S. Stoner: SHROUD EATER

Thanks to Jean from the band Shroud Eater for sending their demo!
Shroud Eater is a Stoner Rock band from Florida, U.S.A. Their music is influenced with the following styles: Stoner, Sludge, Doom, Punk, 90'S Alternative And Metal. I think this demo sounds heavy as hell! Great guitar riffs, awesome vocals and great rhythms. You really should hear this. I guess that Shroud Eater is another promise for the future. I can't wait to hear a full-lenght album. Enjoy and support Shroud Eater!

Inspired by a common love of the dark and dirty sounds of late 70's heavy metal and 90's alternative, stoner and sludge rock, SHROUD EATER emerges as a three-pronged sewer beast onto the sunny façade of Miami, Florida. Merging gruff howlings with an arsenal of roughhewn, ragged riffs and locomotive rhythms, the band erupts with an impassioned fury that portrays the beating they dish out through the power of their music.

A big thanks to João Paulo Carneiro for sending two great bands. This is one of them.

Mexican 70's Vibe Mellow Psychedelics

A week ago I posted the album Paradise Mescaline by the Mexican Stoner band El Diablo. This is their self-titled album. Paradise Mescaline is a hard rockin', fuzz-driven album, El Diablo is totally different. This album is far more mellow and psychedelic. I didn't expect this at all, but it is still great stuff. Enjoy!

Punk Influenced Stoner From The U.K.

A special thanks to Dustin for dropping this album in my Mailbox.
Southbound n' Supercharged is the debut album of the U.K. based Master Charger.
Master Charger plays a mix of Stoner Rock, Punk, Metal, Doom and 70's Hard Rock. They combine these styles very well, but in my opinion the main point is Stoner Doom. The three (!) guitars are real fuzz canons. The rhythms are great and these guys know how to write good songs! I really recommend this album! Enjoy and give Master Charger some support!

Master Charger formed in the summer of 2006. Hailing from Nottinghamshire UK. The band features members from the cult British death metal band Evoke, Ambient experimental sludge doomsters See it Burn and the then crustcore legends Intense Degree. Initially Master Charger began life as a three piece until 2008 when they recruited a second guitarist. Influenced by a wide range of music. Fusing 70's Rock with Punk / Metal tinges and throwing in a psychedelic twist mixed with downtuned monster grooves provides an overall raw Rock N' Roll feel. The band began to jam ideas and quickly found that they had enough material to record an album, the debut album is now completed and is entitled "Southbound N' Supercharged", Master Charger plan to play live very soon once the album is released and hope to target a whole range of audiences with their retro but yet fresh modern sound and approach to heavy music.
