From Venice, Italy comes the Stoner Doom band Blood Red Water. This trio has just released their free download debut EP and I must say it's a nice piece of work.

This band play great heavy songs with awesome guitar riffs and thunderous drums. One point of criticism is the vocals. It sounds pretty good, but it sounds not that loud on this EP.

Nevertheless is Tales Of Addiction And Despair a great EP and a nice start by this band. Enjoy!

Blood Red Water formed in the summer of 2010 with Michele (vocals, ex grindcore bands: NAB and Grunter Screams) Fiorica (ex and bass player in Blank Symbol, now at the drum). Michele & Fiorica were longtime friends, drinking partners and united by the passion for sludge music so they decided to create something wicked.

Immediately Francesco (of mr. Boonekamp) joined them as guitarist and feedback noise junkie.

At first helped by Silvia (of S.M.A.D.) as bass player, then Tarantula (Lorenzo Petri from Gli sportivi , Valium doll) joined ‘em.

For Blood Red Water it became clear that the band would not be the umpteenth cover band in the zone but their interest/purpose is writing the music they like and feel.

All members love bands like EyeHateGod, Eletric Wizard, St. Vitus (list of musical influences is long, very long) but - jam after jam - they realized to not belong to any particular genre. Some tunes are pretty doomy, other tunes could be more into stoner stuff.

Blood Red Water lyrics are a merciless portrait of what can save a life or ditch it. Far away from fantasy themes, lyrics give off Michele’s life experience; you can even find redeem words as well as the deepest dopesick despair.

At the end of 2011, they entered at the Flameout studio and they did their first 5 songs EP “Tales of Addiction and Despair”.

For the time being the EP is in digital format with a free download, but a physical release of “Tales of Addiction and Despair” is coming soon in the pure spirit of D.I.Y.

In the meantime line-up is changed: Lorenzo left them and they got a new additional guitar player; so the current line-up is:

Now BRW are planning to play live and spread their EP as much as they can.

Turn It On

Check out this brand new band! It's coming from Montreal, Canada and this group of four is called Lion Farm. These guys play very nice Rock 'n' Roll with a Stoner Rock base, but there are also other elements, such as Hard Rock, Metal, Psychedelic and Space.

This EP contains four excellent songs with brilliant riffs and a great sound. These are catchy songs with great vocals.

A very impressive start of a new band! So keep an eye on Lion Farm! Enjoy!

Born out of a volcano of fire and fury, Lion Farm sinks its teeth into the jugular of Rock n’ Roll. With metal overtones and psychedelic underpinnings, Lion Farm claws their way down the mainline of anthemic rock.

Mike Foxxx and Malstain are longtime collaborators, first surfacing in the late 90s from the same fertile Toronto scene that spawned Peaches, Feist, Gonzales and Mocky. Their bands Rock ‘n’ Roll Bad Boy XXXpress and Seventy Whore were known by underground rock cognoscenti for their embrace of unabashed party-rocking in the po-faced indie-rock/post-rock era.

Pounding out catchy, heavy tunes, Lion Farm has quickly laid claim to the title of The Pride of Rock n’ Roll.

Ride To Suicide

This was dropped in the C-Box a couple of hours ago. So thanks to the one who dropped it!

The Rockabones is a four piece band from Hannover, Germany. First Takes is the first demo by this band and it contains four tracks of high octane Riffrock with Stoner, Metal, Punk and Rock 'n' Roll influences.

These guys make quite a start with this demo. The sound is pretty good for a demo and the songs are really ass kicking. The vocals fit perfect with this straight forward Rock music. No further words are necessary here, go listen and... Enjoy!

The Mentalist

The Mentalist is an one song album by the Idaho based band The Reptilians. This foursome plays Heavy Rock with Metal influences or, as they call it themselves, Pragueressive Applecore Meatal.

According to their Facebook page, The Reptilians are inspired by the following bands: Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Acid Bath, Neurosis, Opeth, Pantera, Agents Of Oblivion, Type O Negative, Deadboy And The Elephantmen, King Crimson, Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Primus, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Nile, Quodia, The Doors, Dying Fetus, Mastodon, Six Fe. This gives you a small clue of what The Reptillians is about.

The Mentalist is a 27 minute lasting track. It is a pretty entertaining song with not a dull moment. This song is a clear display of their great musicianship.

Strange situations can lead to great things. Take the example of The Reptilians. Based jointly out of the Idahoan SLC suburb known as Pocatello and the desperate agricultural community of Burley, Idaho, The Reptilians are faced with a few less-than-usual circumstances. To start, there is essentially no music scene around them. Collectively, the members of The Reptilians have accounted for a significant portion of what local scene there has been in the last ten years. Add to that a significant density of highly religious locals, geographical isolation, ready access to various drugs, and you have one curious stew brewing.

Masterminded by a sharp witted anti-philosopher with a penchant for spewing forth bullet proof rants against the world, The Reptilians have been growing like mold under your floorboards for nearly a decade. Unnoticed by the general public around them and thin on outside influence, they have been able to craft a 26 minute opus of thoughtful, well planned, sonically intriguing, catchy, at times intentionally confounding music. From Brooklyn, New York comes the band Bezoar. This trio consisting of two guys and one girl plays Psychedelic and Progressive Doom with Metal influences.

Their album Wyt Deth contains eight varied songs. There are beside the heavy songs also some acoustical tracks on this album. I especially like the heavy ones.

What really is striking about this band is the voice of Sara. She has an awesome and remarkable voice.

Beside the voice is also the music quite unique. Because of the strange rhytms this is not an everyday album. You really have to experience Wyt Deth yourself. Early march will this album be released on vinyl, limited to 250 copies. Enjoy!

Bezoar wails and hails from Brooklyn, New York. This power trio has been on the stoner, psychedelic doom metal scene since 2007 but is more majestic, massive and cerebral than any mere genre tag. Tyler Villard previously played with Ruksac, a Boston hard core band, and Sara Palmquist played with tripped out noise band Isle of Citadel. When these bands disbanded Bezoar was formed out of Sara and Tyler’s desire to continue making heavy weird and boundary defying music. They eventually became a power trio with Sara on vocals and bass, Tyler on guitar, and Jesse Smith on drums. With influences ranging from Sleep, YOB, 1349, Diamanda Galas, Swans, Mayhem, Electric Wizard, Eyehategod, Slayer, and Darkthrone among many others, Bezoar are not out to color within the lines. I would like to thank Shawn from the band Balero for sending me their CD's!

From Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania, USA comes a trio named Balero. This band plays very nice Instrumental Stoner Rock.

The recipe for Balero is quite plainly: You take one part of heavy guitar riffs, one part throbbing bass and one part pounding drums. Shuffle this gently together in a recording studio and there is this nice heavy sound!

Their sound reminds me somehow to Karma To Burn and Mothertrucker.

Balero has released two recordings: The five track EP One Planet Short Of The Sun and the 2010 album After The End. These are two great albums that are definitely worth it! Enjoy!

Here’s the lowdown, BALERO got together in Wilkes-Barre, PA in 2002 with all members having the same goal in mind, to play the music that we love for the people who love this kind of music. Bear Baiting

Bear Baiting from Los Angeles USA is formed by the two bass players Matt and Dennis. These guys play, with addition of some electronic devices, some pretty nice Atmospheric Post Rock. Bear Baiting has just released their same titled EP. It contains six tracks, which are short and compact. So there are no very long drawn-out compositions. This is the strenght of Bear Baiting: Creating short and atmospheric songs.
This EP is a great sounding recording and I wonder how these guys stand out on stage. Enjoy!

Bear Baiting was born as the brainchild of bassists Matt Boylan (Cuneiform) and Dennis Valles (Helen 55) in 2008. The two met at a mutual friend's, (National Sunday Law) show at the L.A. Knitting Factory and discussed to possibility of a 2 bass project. Shortly thereafter, the two got together and started writing material. The combination of Boylan's thunderous riffing, plus Valles' diversity of tones, made for interesting music, but the project lacked proper drums. The two contemplated getting a drummer to join the fold, but prospects were limited. Valles decided to program all the drums, rather than finding a drummer, and take a more DIY approach, resulting in a more realized vision for the music. After getting past the learning curve, the songs began to take shape. Multiple sounds and textures combined to form something truly unique. While not as technical as most instrumental artists, Bear Baiting sets out to form more of a soundscape than nonstop riffing.

Here is an outstanding demo I've found at the Russian Stoner Forum.

From the Russian capital Moscow come a lot of great bands such as Stone Cold Boys, Cactus Jumper, Cosmonauts Day, Dirty Season and Stoner Train.

To this list of bands can be added the name Predicted. This four piece band plays some impressive Stoner Doom with Psychedelic, Sludge and Metal influences. Their demo called Demos From Witch House is decent sounding recording, considering that this is a brand new band.

This demo contains five awesome tracks that are asking for a sequel. And I'm looking forward to that next recording. Highly Recommended! Enjoy!

From Budapest, Hungary comes the new band Head For The Sun. This four piece band plays Stoner Rock with Sludgy influences.

Their EP four track Live At Hungarian StonerRockBlog 3rd Birthday Fuzztival is a nice sounding piece of work. The guitar produces some great heavy riffs, the bass and drums are quite pounding and the vocals are very good.

Head For The Sun shows with this EP their capabilities. I think there's a great future for this band. I look forward to the next release. Enjoy!

500 Ft. Of Pipe was a Drug Rock band from Detroit, USA. This trio has released three full lenght albums, one EP and this single.

Side A of this single contains the song So Good. This is a pretty great song. And there is this track on side B: Your Heart Is Angry (But Your Mind Is Stoned). This song is so damned awesome. It is one of the best songs that is ever recorded. It is a hell of a Rock 'n' Roll song. Enjoy!

Dos E.P.'s is a compilation album by the Los Angeles based Stoner Rock band Nebula. This compilation from 2001 begins with the three unreleased tracks Rocket, Long Day and Bardo Airways. The remaining eight tracks come from the Sun Creature EP and the split with Lowrider. Five of these tracks sound different because they are remixed.

Dos E.P.'s is a nice album with awesome tracks from the early era of Nebula. Enjoy!

Nebula's fourth full-length album, 'Dos EP's,' was released outside the US several months ago, and is only now seeing a proper release in their home country. What we have here is a reissue of their two classic EPs; 'Sun Creature' on the now-defunct Man's Ruin label, and the legendary Nebula/Lowrider split. Both have been at least partially remixed and remastered. Dos EP's also includes three new tunes, lest the buyer be under the mistaken impression that they are buying a simple reissue.

Make no mistake: Nebula is perhaps THE premier band in what some call stoner rock. They carry the banner high, writing guitar-led, ass-kicking tunes with a strong 70s vibe, dealing with the joys of substance indulgence, denim jackets, smokin' women, and the freedom of the open road. Plus, they tour like

hardened road dogs, traveling the world and living the life. Other prominent bands that deal with such

subjects have either broken up or produced recent music of questionable value. Nebula's recent music seems slightly more spare compared to earlier efforts, with lyrics that seem oversimplified at times, but as see it they've outlasted the other "famous" bands of the genre with their integrity intact, and deserve their place in the sun.

In any case, Dos EP's has some of the strongest music Nebula ever released, and they're right to keep it available. With the help of engineer Mathias Schneeberger, some of the previously released tunes have been changed, whether in tempo or with the addition of a Fender Rhodes piano. The results are enhanced and the songs are reinvigorated. The new tuneage sounds like it would be perfectly at home on their previous full-length, Charged. 'Rocket' has a classic charging riff, straight out of AC/DC's 'Whole Lotta Rosie,' or Led Zep's 'Rock and Roll,' or even Motorhead's 'Over the Top.' 'Long Day' encourages the listener to just take it easy with a basic boogie vibe, and 'Bardo Airways' has rhythmic sighs like in Jimi's 'Purple Haze,' punctuating lyrics about the joys of getting loaded.

This is far more than a simple reissue; it's a disc by a band that obviously cares a lot about its recorded

output. It seems that they review their past music as available for re-evaluation, rather than as a "sacred"

body of work. Well, it’s paid off. Hell, I've got the originals, and I'm pleased to add this to my CD shelf.

Snail The Wah

Electric Magma is a band from Toronto, Canada. This trio plays incredible great Instrumental Stoner Rock. These guys have released until now six albums and the seventh one called Canadian Samurai is coming up.

The album Snail The Wah is my personal favorite. It contains 13 tracks of Wah Wah madness. This great pedal is all over this album. Even the bass is here and there infected with this magnificant effect.

Beside that does this album have a very awesome sound. It is thick and heavy. The riffs are stunning, just as the bass and drums.

All of the 13 songs are compositional masterpieces. A brilliant album! Enjoy!

Electric Magma formed in 2000 in the tiny hamlet known as Toronto, Canada. Emerging from the ashes of previous musical endeavors, the thunderous trio comprised of Tryg Smith , Tim Reesor and Mario Lunardo forged ahead with their vision of sonic eruption. Halfway up the fuzzed-out sludge ladder, somewhere in between the metal boogie rock of Clutch and the surfed-up stoner rock of Fu Manchu, lies the sound of burning liquid rock. Electrified Magma.

While many groups struggle with the concept of applying vocal melodies over their musical groove, Electric Magma opted to side-step this dilemma and simply forgo the vocals and in their place drop in double the riffs. While the lack of a singer can be a crippling obstacle for many a lesser band, it has only added fuel to their collective fire and driven their fuzzed-out riff rock into another dimension.

Notorious merch whores, Electric Magma are second only to KISS when it comes to pimping the name onto anything and everything…soup to nuts, condoms to candy bars…their merch table alone is often an event unto itself, representing a bigger spread than Grandma’s baked goods table at the local church bazaar.

Currently promoting the release of their latest album entitled “Mudshovel”, which was released in April 2009, Electric Magma barrel ahead like a runaway freight train. This latest record may in fact be every stoner rock fans wet dream as they have created the ultimate sing-along for psychopaths and hard rocking maniacs. Attack From Mars

Tuber is a trio hailing from Greece. This band plays an outstanding blend of Post Rock and Instrumental Stoner Rock. Until now, Tuber has released one EP. This EP is also available as free download on their Bandcamp site.

Their music is quite stunning. These guys are really good in what they're doing. They show some great musicianship. It all turns out in these four songs. Their music is pretty entertaining. It goes from atmospheric to heavy and everything what's in between. Beside that is the sound of this EP very good.

This EP must definitely be heard. Enjoy!

Tuber grew up in a sunny place, south of Greece, in an island called Crete. They were hiding from the sun, jamming in dark studios and playing their music in rock caves. As they moved north, sounds became lighter, since they started miss hot ground. Balance came as a result of smash, dark embraced light and improvisation turned into an effortless and instinctive process. Tuber moved their interest into new forms, founding themselves experimenting with compositions that combine mixed styles and sounds from different ground. Focus is now on rock aesthetic flirting with psychedelic atmosphere and a touch of romantic mood. Iecava is the third album by the band Khuda from Leeds, UK. This album is a logical sequel to the 2010 album Palingenesia.

This duo presents again an impressive mixture of atmospheric Post Rock and aggressive Noise. The rhythm changes are, like the previous albums, again overwhelming.

Iecava contains eight tracks, which are all stunning. An absolute recommendation! Enjoy!

Khuda are extremely good at making me feel uncomfortable in new and interesting ways. For only two people, Tom Brooke and Steve Myles have done a lot to take the standard post-metal formula and twist some new life into it. And though the result is a bit confusing at first, it’s certainly an interesting and rewarding listen.

The first thing that becomes apparent is the sparseness of the music. While the twain certainly pack a whole lot of music in for a two-person outfit, the amount of space in the music is still immediately noticeable. The sound consists almost entirely of high-end guitars and percussion, and while there are lower parts in the mix, they take on an almost negligible role. This becomes extremely apparent in the band’s dynamics, especially on the forte end. Their climaxing crescendos come off as strained and unpleasing rather than emotional and cathartic. This is a pretty big hurdle when playing in a genre where dynamicism is one of the most prominent features. It’s not that it sounds bad—it merely gives the music an unsettling, almost ethereal quality.

Compounding this sense of uneasiness are the unusual arrangements. While Khuda have scaled back the length of their pieces since 2010’s Palingenesia, this newfound compactness doesn’t mean the music is any less confusing. The pair are still throwing around sudden tempo changes and playing through unusual time signatures like it’s no one’s business. And while they do so with extreme competence, the constant reframing of their music only serves to augment the initial sense of wariness this album presents.

To point at something solid, the percussion half of Khuda has always been an unexpected delight. While I’m not a fan of how the drums are mixed (the snare sounds extremely open and tinny, almost like a neglected tom), Steve Myles plays with an aggressive casualness that sounds extremely fluid and natural. His style of playing is busy yet confident, providing a stunning antithesis to the frequently scaled-back and minimalist guitar work of Tom Brooke. That isn’t to say Brooke can’t shred with the best of them when the piece calls for it; his guitar work can be as psychedelic as if it were 1969. But often he chooses to forgo elaborate guitar lines when a simpler one will suffice, and that constant tension between the frantic drumming and the restrained guitar lines gives the music a severe case of sonic schizophrenia.

After listening to it a few times, the real merit this music is hiding can shine forth. Though Khuda have always been extremely good at creating interesting musical ideas, it is only on Iecava where the music finally reflects that. One thing they’ve learned since Palingenesia is how to write music that doesn’t sound merely like musical ideas strung together without purpose. By sensibly compacting their writing, the pieces finally feel like legitimate songs, and not collections of unrelated ideas.

All in all, there are a lot of good things to be said about Khuda’s latest effort. While there is still certainly room for them to grow, there is no doubt in my mind that this band will bring some more great albums to the table.

So this is the end of the year 2011. I think this year was a great musical year with a lot of great releases.

I will not bother you with an end-of-the-year-list, but I will tell you what my favorite album of 2011 is: The debut album of the French band Mars Red Sky.

In this last post of 2011 I present you the free download compilation album that is offered by the Italian label Go Down Records. Stone In is a duo from Vancouver, Canada. These guys play Heavy Stoner Rock with Psychedelic, Progressive and Post Rock influences. Their music is stunning and quite unique.

The Drop And The Sea is the title of their debut 12" single. This single is also available as free download.

Side A of this single is the title track. This song is an combination of four separate songs. Side B contains the awesome track Take A Look. This song is also subject to seventies influences. On this side there is also a bonus track called Backing In Future Days.

Early november I posted an article about the upcoming album Within The Witch by the New Zealand band Stone Angels with the singer Steven Bell of the band Second Gear Grind.

Well, here is that album! Within The Witch is an album with seven Sludge songs with Doom, Metal and Black influences. The music of Stone Angels is utterly heavy and rude. The riffs and rhythms are filthy and brutal.

The vocals and screams are fitting well in the sound and are very impressive. Steven Bell does show a total other side of himself compared with the work he has done with Second Gear Grind.

Within The Witch is an album that for sure will be appreciated by folks who are really into Heavy.

I'd like to thank José from the band Killimanjaro for sharing their EP!

Killimanjaro is a new power trio from Barcelos, Portugal. This band plays energetic Heavy Rock with Stoner and Seventies influences.

The next contribution comes from the Costa Rican band Hongo Fuu.

Hongo Fuu is an one-man band of Félix Arburola. This guy has just released the EP Marshmallow Sleep. For the recording of this EP, Félix has collaborated with several musicians.

The description of Hongo Fuu according to Facebook is Stoner Rock / Spaghetti Western / Experimental / Acid Rock.

What I hear is an EP with a unique sound. There are several elements in the music, such as psychedelic, acoustic and atmospheric parts. All with all a freaky, but very nice EP! Enjoy!

2011 is nearing it's end, and BANG! There is this stunning album that can be counted as one of the best of this year!

Cosmonauts Day from Moscow, Russia is a four piece band that plays outstanding Post Rock/Metal with Sludge and Space influences.

This band has released their Live Demo EP in may and now they're back with their full-length album called Paths Of The Restless. This eight track album is definitely an impressive masterpiece. The musicians do a great job with their instruments. Thereby is the sound of this album very good.

All of the songs of this album are great, but if I have to pinpoint some highlights, then I have to say it are the songs Captain, Rift, Satellite and The Great Disease.

If It Ain't Broke... Break It

From Dublin, Northern Ireland comes the band And So I Watch You From Afar. This Post Rock band has released this majestic full-length debut album in 2009.

There is a lot happened in Dublin over the past decades and this is reflected in the music of And So I Watch You From Afar. This is Post Rock with a quite aggressive appearance. Beside that there are also beautiful atmospheric passages in their music.

This album is absolute a recommended masterpiece with high musical skills. Two songs I want to mention as my favorites are Set Guitars To Kill and If It Ain't Broke... Break It. Enjoy!

That Derry’s finest instrumental rock troupe And So I Watch You From Afar are oh-so-frequently lumped in with the post-rock brigade is not so much unfortunate as it is downright wrong, but it does say something about the genre. In the eyes of all but the seasoned observer, a band doesn’t have to do anything, or sound a particularly way, to be labelled “post-rock”: just not having a vocalist is enough. Now, nothing irks a band more than being pigeon-holed, but it must hurt doubly to be holed in the wrong coop entirely. And with all due respect to post-rock, And So I Watch You From Afar’s music is so far removed from the post-crescendo genre that it warrants screaming from the roof-tops- in fact, that wouldn’t be such a bad idea. The Belfast-based band’s raucous sound is a pithy amalgamation of the ferocity and intensity of DC hardcore and the carefree abandon of arena rock. To point out the obvious contradiction would be to miss the point entirely.

Given the obvious lack of lyrics (apart from an “oi!” here and they odd “hey!” there), the song titles have to be a little more descriptive than they typically are. Opener ‘Set Guitars To Kill’ is a perfect example, kicking the album off with a crunching power chord riff and pulsating reverb-soaked drums that give way to increasingly more chaotic and dissonant exchanges. Likewise, the impeccably-titled ‘TheseRIOTSareJUSTtheBEGINNING’ is frenetically-paced and relentlessly aggressive, while ‘Don’t Waste Time Doing Things You Hate’ sees the band indulge their zanier pleasures: from signature shred-guitar moves rarely heard outside a guitarist’s bedroom to sexy Meters-like funk rhythms and a beer-soaked ‘Hey Jude’-style gang sing-a-long for the last couple of minutes. In truth, there is the odd moment within a song of overt post-rockishness: single ‘A Little Bit Of Solidarity Goes A Long Way’ works the silence-crescendo model to a T. But the overall effect is more comparable to compatriots and frequent touring partners Adebisi Shank, as they’re more likely to lock into a dynamic groove and play off that energy than to tease listeners with the quiet-loud formula.

Not only is And So I Watch You From Afar well-balanced between the band members, it’s also a quality effort from start to finish. It’s always tempting to load the best tracks to the front- and, to be fair, the opening three songs are the most immediate on the album- but the album ends just as strongly as it starts. ‘The Voiceless,’ one of two tracks to re-appear from the group’s debut EP, another track that hints at erupting into an Explosions In The Sky-like cacophonous crescendo, but instead holds off without really sacrificing anything in the way of grandeur. Following that, and finishing the album on a high, is ‘Eat The City, Eat It Whole’ (Pedants’ Corner: that should be a semi-colon). It’s stylistically different from anything else on the album, beginning with some country and blues-tinged motifs before patiently easing into a familiar mathy groove, the type that litters the album and makes it such a wonderful, coherent listen from start to finish.

Connoisseur II And The Hit Joint Sessions

Almost two years ago I've posted the album Connoiseur by the band Mountains Of Blow.

Now is this band from Los Angeles back with two simultaneously released free download albums called Connoisseur II and The Hit Joint Sessions. Musically seen are these albums a continuation of what they've done on the first one. It is Sludge and Metal influenced Heavy Rock music with again great repetitive riffs and rhytms.

A new thing is the addition of vocals. The album Connoisseur II is with exception of the song Matrix (Blue) almost completely instrumental, but almost all the songs from the album The Hit Joint Sessions are with vocals.

These vocals sounds great and are a welcome addition to their music. It makes it more complete.

So it is fair to say that Mountains Of Blow has grown and these new albums are a proof of that. Enjoy!

Mountains of Blow (named after a Ghostface Killah lyric) was formed in Los Angeles during May of 2009 by Shane Berman and Bill Hawken after their former band Exoneration broke up due to unforseen circumstances.

MOB played several shows as a free-form jam, guitar-and-drums duo with no set songs. Continuing with this set-up, the group released the self-recorded 'Connoisseur' album, comprised of 4 free form jams which were met with positive reviews from several stoner metal sites. Around this time, close friend and former Moment of Youth bandmate James O'Mara began jamming with the group and eventually joined on bass.

The band then wrote many songs and proceded to play all over LA on a regular basis throughout the rest of 2009 and 2010. However, this incarnation of the band began to dissolve and played it's last show opening up for Torche at the Bootleg Theater in Echo Park. Before completely disbanding, an 8-song recording was completed in 10 hours at the Hit Joint Studios in Silverlake, Los Angeles.

After the departure of James O'Mara on bass, Shane & Bill continued jamming once again and came up with what would become Connoisseur II. 5 tracks of mostly instrumental jams recorded at their home studio in Silverlake.

From Jackson, Tennessee, USA comes Otis Reaper. This four piece band plays some incredible Sludge/Doom/Metal with Punk and even NWOBHM elements. It has resulted in this debut cassette. Echoes In The Night

One Inch Giant is a new band from Gothenburg, Sweden. This quartet has released their debut album Malva three months ago. This album contains six tracks of high quality Stoner Rock.

Their sound is according to their Facebook page influenced by Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains and Mastodon. I think that it is quite correct, the guitar riffs are somewhat like Black Sabbath, the vocals remind me a lot of that guy from Alice In Chains and the music of this band has the same heaviness as Mastodon.

Malva is a great sounding album with great riffs, pounding drum and bass and outstanding vocals. There's only one thing, this album is with 31 minutes a bit short. One Inch Giant can make that right with the next release. I hope they do!

Underdogs is an italian trio that plays some superb Stoner Rock with Psychedelic, Seventies and Grunge elements. Revolution Love is a nice collection of songs that goes from energetic and up-tempo to some more laid-back.

Once in a great while, a band comes along that sets itself apart from the rest.

With the recent explosion of independent music this becomes an even more difficult task.

As rock bands evolve and develop a more technical and refined sound, it becomes increasingly necessary to sonically "strike hard and fast" and leave your listener "hooked and begging for more. Enter UNDERDOGS.

Powerful and versatile trio inspired by the "desert rock", supported by GoDown Records and formed in 2004.

They already occupy a respectable place in the Italian underground, thanks to a lot of granitic & wild r'n'roll gigs all over Italy (and not only..), supporting international cult bands such as Nebula, Josiah, Colour Haze, OJM, Joe Lalli (Fugazi), The Answer, Brant Bjork (Kyuss), and many more!!

The lucky debut album "Ready to burn" was released in 2007 for GoDown Records, followed in 2009 by an E.P. unplugged "Dogs without plugs" (self-produced and available for free download).

The Fruit Is Still Fresh

Exactly two months ago I've posted the album A Good Tip For A Good Time by the Norwegian band Cato Salsa Experience. In that post I've asked you to look out for that album, because it was really hard to get. There were a couple reactions by the readers of this blog. Because of these reactions I can call myself a happy owner of that CD.

Today I was pleased again when I found this CD on my doormat. It is the Japanese issue of the most recent album The Fruit Is Still Fresh. This version contains four bonus live tracks.

The Fruit Is Still Fresh is again a garantee for some infectious catchy and energetic Psychedelic Garage tunes. An example of that is the song Lovesick, once played and it remains sticking in your head for the rest of the day. You are warned! Enjoy!

Meet the hardest working band in Norway: Cato Salsa Experience! And (along with Ricochets, Madrugada, and Motorpsycho) they're also one of the most credible rock bands around our shores. I had the pleasure of seeing the latter half (to bad I missed the full set) of their performance at this years Roskilde Festival, Denmark, to experience what a great live band they are. So what about recordings then?

The Fruit is still Fresh is album number two (their debut A Good Tip For A Good Time came almost three years ago), with more of their garage'n'roll rhythm'n'grooves. Or; maybe one of the titles of the songs from this album is a fitting tag: "Rock'n'Soul". Their sounds twist and turns, and even though this music really begs to be performed live it works remarkably well on disc. Much thanks to the tightness of the band and the arrangements of the songs. The mixture of the charisma and energy of front man (singer/guitarist) Christian Engfelt, the dancing and playful bass thrills of Cato "Salsa" Thomassen, the steady drum-beat from the hands and feet of Jon M. Riise, all topped or touched with a spicy taste of organ by Nina Bjørndalen.

CSX have played 200 gigs the last three years, which is understandable when listening to how tight and punchy The Fruit... is. A few tracks: opening song "Living Longer Each Year"; the energetic "Runaround"; the explosive "Up & Around"; the slightly Television/Tom Verlaine-ish (guitars!) "Waiting For The Summer Sun". Plus my fave of them all: "Candyman", which is a rolling, stomping, thundering, whispering, blistering song.

Good luck around the world, CSX. Guess he success will increase (they've already been on tv soundtracks in Jackass and The Osbournes). In the USA they're (along with Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herren Band) signed to Emperor Norton Records. In Japan Epic/Sony distribute the CSX groove-machine.

Your Protected is a Post Rock band from Brynmawr, South Wales, UK. According to their Facebook page is this four piece band influenced by the following: Cloudkicker, Baroness, Tool, Animals As Leaders, Maybeshewill and the awesome band And So I Watch You From Afar.

The selftitled EP contains six outstanding instrumental songs. Especially the guitars make quite an impression. The high level of musicianship has resulted in progressive and sometimes complex music, which me make think a bit of Math Rock.

This is yet another fantastic free download Bandcamp discovery!
From Tampere, Finland come the one-man project Consciousness Removal Project by Antti Loponen.

This guy plays impressive Post-Metal with Sludge influences. The album The Last Season is an atmospheric masterpiece. This album contains five amazing tracks that display great musical capabilities.

Antti Loponen had some help with this album of several musicians. Whereby I especially was touched by the violin in the songs Soil Sacrifice and Kyoto.

The Post-Rock genre is in general instrumental music. That is not the case with this project. Antti shows some great vocals, from clean to scream, it sounds awesome.

So The Last Season is for sure a need-to-hear album! Enjoy!

CONSCIOUSNESS REMOVAL PROJECT is a one-man post-metal band from Tampere, Finland. Its only official member Antti Loponen is solely responsible not only for compositions, lyrics and arrangements but also for most instruments and the record production. With the help of a live collective, Consciousness Removal Project has also been able to perform live since 2008.

The music of Consciousness Removal Project has been published on the internet for free since 2004. The style has evolved from guitar-based instrumental rock/ambient towards a post-metallish direction and vocals have been added into the equation. Been Obscene is a Psychedelic Stoner Rock band from Salzburg, Austria. This quartet has released last year their album The Magic Table Dance. This is a fine album, but a point of critisism is that some songs reminds a lot of Color Haze.

Now is Been Obscene back with their new album Night O'Mine. With this album does this band show more a sound of their own. This is an entertaining album with eight impressive tracks.

Beside the Psychedelic Stoner Rock, does their sound contain also some Seventies, Alternative, Progressive and even Pop elements.

Night O'Mine is an album that definitely should not be lacking in your record collection. So make sure you get it at Elektrohash or your local record store. Enjoy!

Been Obscene, founded 2008 in Salzburg, Austria, are tremendous versatile. Hypnotic Stoner Rock with Pop elements? Psychedelic Post Rock? Alternative progressive vibe? They inweave new song structures with classics and create their own universe.

Night O’Mine is the second album of the quartet, signed by Elektrohasch Records since their debut The Magic Table Dance in 2010. It is more gloomy and mystical than their debut. More experienced, detached and filigree. Rocking parts with spacy breaks and mosh parts mixed up with easy sound walls. On top a brilliant voice, which always modulates perfectly to the different atmospheres of the songs.

Music-wise as well as lyric-wise Night O’Mine leads through the schizophrenia of the night with its combined abyss and climax of human beings. This awesome piece of heaviness called Head Of The Demon was releseased in 2009 by the band Tank Destroyer. This band from Columbus, Ohio plays stunning and heavy Stoner/Doom Metal with obvious Sludge influences.

Tank Destroyer is according to their Facebook page inspired by: Black Sabbath, YOB, Boris, Deep Purple, Pentagram and Sleep.

This album is the only release by this band so far and a new album is scheduled for 2012.

Head Of The Demon is an album with eight superb songs, that together last for almost an hour. The sound of this album is very good. So what more do you want? Enjoy!

Justin, Chris, Dan, Ben, and Michael formed Tank destroyer in July/August of 2008. Recording and playing live commenced soon after. Great Barrier Riff

This is the first time that I see the term Great Barrier Riff in combination with heavy music! That name fits this demo very well!

Sea Bastard is a four piece band from Brighton, UK. This band is a formation of two other Brighton Doom bands.

Sea Bastard plays stunning Stoner Doom Metal, whereby the name Electric Wizard as first comes to mind. They're according to their Facebook page also influenced by the following bands: Sleep, Cathedral, Celtic Frost, Corrupted, Black Sabbath, Burning Witch, Weedeater, Ramesses, St Vitus and Pentagram.

Needless to say that you can expect some slow and heavy tunes of this awesome new band.

The sound of this three songs is not that great, but hey, it's a demo! It gives anyway an impression of what Sea Bastard is capable of. Enjoy!

Sea Bastard recorded our demo on Wednesday 19th October 2011 at 284 Studios in Brighton. The demo's a live recording with vocals added afterwards and we think it captures the abject filthiness of Sea Bastard pretty well. We're all listening through it at the moment and once we're happy with it we'll post it on here and probably stick up a link for a free MP3 download, unless we decide it's worth a few quid.

There are plans for a CD version with awesome artwork provided by our very own Oliver Irongiant. Hopefully we'll have some of these ready for the Pagan Altar show on the 31st. There are also plans for t-shirts featuring the CD artwork which should hopefully also be ready for the gig.

Speaking of which, our first show will be on the 31st October at the Green Door Store with Pagan Altar and Mönarch. We'll also be playing the final Metal Monday on the 19th December with Enos and Slabdragger and hopefully supporting Conan at the Albert in January, though that's not quite confirmed yet.

Stone Angels is the new band of Steven Bell from the New Zealand band Second Gear Grind. Stone Angels will release their debut album called Within The Witch early december. The album will be presented at the NZ's Stonerfest '11 among several other heavy bands.

For now is an unmastered version of the titlesong Within The Witch available as free download.

Where Second Gear Grind plays pure Stoner Rock, has Stone Angels also more Sludge, Doom and Metal influences. Within The Witch is a song that has made quite an impression on me. It is a lot heavier than any Second Gear Grind song.

If the song Within The Witch is the standard for the upcoming album, then I'm very eager to get that album. Enjoy!

Here is another awesome free download album I've found on Bandcamp.

From Chicago, USA comes Verma. This five piece band plays some incredible Progressive/Experimental/Psychedelic/Space Rock. Until now they've released three albums and this is their second one called Salted Earth. (Also available on cassette, just as their first album.)

The music that Verma plays is something great. Their compositions are for the most part instrumental, but when the singer starts to mesmerize with her voice, it gets totally stunning. Her voice really adds something to this fantastic music.

Imagine, if you will, that something has gone terribly wrong. Beneath the incessant, howling wind from the barren terrain beyond, the only discernible sound, the rhythmic gasp for breath from your own parched throat. Scanning the distance, mirages dance like radiation on the horizon. Can you believe everything you see? Though prophets had long foretold, you cannot help but mourn the mark of time, the metronome of human history that shadowed your former existence. Now, with stumbling step you must unclench white-knuckled fists and begin to travel, never forgetting the shadowy night of the past but willing to risk this primal step into the light of day.

Bent equally on bristling psychedelic squall and driving motorik, Verma emerged in the wake of an experimental improvisational collective. Blending a wide range of influences from proto-metal, minimalism, electronic, space rock and drone, the group constructs and explores cinematic sonic landscapes. Verma is amoebic in nature, coexisting with the mechanical. The driving rhythm section creates a solid architecture for swirling guitars and haunting vocal melodies, all beneath a haze of sweeping synthesizers. This repetitive dervish of sound rises from dark roots to a meditative plane, at once the atmosphere of metamorphosis and cerebral introspection.

The group, based in Chicago, released two cassette tapes in 2010. The first self-titled release (Plus Tapes, 2010) offers a mix of improvised first takes recorded to cassette in their practice space. The second, Salted Earth (Priority Male, 2010), features tracks from their live set recorded at Pieholden Suite Sound.

Khuda is a duo from Leeds, UK. I saw these guys perform last week and they made quite an impression. Khuda plays stunnig Instrumental music that shifts from psychedelic and atmospheric Post Rock to aggressive Noise. A strong element of Khuda is the constant changing of rhythms. Their sound reminds me of bands like Red Sparowes, Pelican and Ahkmed.

Khuda has released one EP and two albums. This one is their first album from 2010 called Palingenesia. This album contains six excellent tracks. Enjoy!

It’s taken long enough, but the album finally came out. I spoke to these two (that’s right, there are only two of them) after a show having been local supports for Mouth of the Architect. I asked about an album to buy, and apparently it had been finished for over a year without a label to release it until Field Records (Her Name Is Calla, Maybeshewill) picked them up, and granted a foothold in the current post-genre trend. They were incredible live considering how so much of their music relies on the guitarist’s feet, and whilst Palingenesia certainly doesn’t fall short of this, it sadly doesn’t have quite the same feeling either.

The album begins with ‘Laleh’ and some compulsory ambient noise which sends us into the main theme of the song, a riff layered with another riff with another riff with some chords, but it’s all interesting so it’s nice. The drums are already pretty stunning. Throughout the album, they manage to keep everything somewhat fresh even when the melodic themes become a little stale and similar between songs; I’m not sure they use any more than two keys over the whole album. It’s still less linear than your average post-rock though, as there are surprising transitions all the time, and only having one guitarist can occasionally make the flow more inventive.

The second track, ‘Black Waters’ is testament to this, as mid-way through the song the feel completely changes to explore some fanciful polymetric work as a bridge, but this excitement doesn’t really last. Mid-album leaves much to be desired, sounding much like the other tracks, save for the latter part of track four, one of the highlights of the album with more variations on a blast-beat than is normal. ‘Mescalito’ again becomes something we’ve heard before, what with its 5/4 and its looping; and the final track doesn’t seem quite epic enough.

What’s strange is how, when listened to out of context of the album, all of these songs are pretty damn good; it’s just that when I first played from start-to-finish, I couldn’t help but lose concentration and catch my thoughts drifting away from the music. Within each song there is change and progression and melody and structure, all of which is attractive, yet as an album something doesn’t quite work. Even the freshest of goods become stale and while, as a two piece band, they do an amazing job imitating Russian Circles, that’s exactly the problem; they sound too much like they’re imitating.

Technically brilliant, mixing done well, never anything lost in the blurriness that loops can sometimes bring; by all accounts this band are great, and they deserve a better rating than an album of background metal. So go see them live, enjoy them, buy some merch; just don’t expect anything as novel as that guy who made the electronica album out of insect noises.

The Danish Psychedelic Garage band Baby Woodrose is about to enter the Black Tomato Studio to record their new album Third Eye Surgery. The release of this album is scheduled for april 2012. Lorenzo Woodrose said that this album will be a totally psyched out space rock album with a few twisted pop songs. So that is something to look forward to.
In the meanwhile Bad Afro Records has released the re-issue of the great album Love Comes Down from 2006 as LP, CD and download.
The vinyl edition is limited to 500 copies. These include also a 7" single with two unreleased songs. That is the second thing to look forward to.

"Back in 2006 whilst Scandinavian Garage Rock was enjoying a high profile due to the likes of Dungen and Soundtrack of Our Lives, Danish ensemble Baby Woodrose managed to land a deal with the sizeable Playground Music. Unfortunately as bigger labels tend to do, they increased the recording budget and then failed to distribute the album effectively thereby creating one of the bands best but hardest to find recordings. Now thanks to the eminently improved distribution of Bad Afro the album has been reissued. Fans of On Trial will recognise band leader Lorenzo Woodrose’s song writing and vocals which flourish here on the beautiful ‘Lights are Changing’ the powerful garage fuzz rocker ‘It’s all over now’ and the trippy and spacey title track. Center Of The Sun is the impressive debut album by the band EYE from Columbus, Ohio, USA. This trio consists of ex-members from the bands The Pretty Weapons and Teeth Of The Hydra. (The awesome album by The Pretty Weapons was previously posted here).

The album Center Of The Sun contains four awesome Psychedelic Space Rock tracks. Their sound shows obvious influences by bands as Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath and King Crimson.

The highlight of this album is the first song. This one is an over 19 minutes lasting masterpiece.

Center Of The Sun is now available as pay-what-you-want download on their Bandcamp site. All of the revenue will used for very (special) limited run of CD's. So maybe you can spend a couple of bucks for this fantastic album. Enjoy!

I like to thank the band Ostend Powers for sharing their album!

This is a hard one for me, because I seldom do Metal reviews.

Ostend Powers is a band from, how surprising, Ostend, Belgium. This band plays Crossover/Metal since 1999.

Last year they've released this same-titled album. It is a nice collection of songs.

These guys are gifted mucians and they play their music with conviction. The vocals are very great, this dude sounds like a hybrid of Mike Patton (Faith No More), Jonathan Davis (Korn) and Serj Tankian (System Of A Down).

Because of the use of Keyboard, does their sound remind me a bit of Faith No More. (Especially in combination with the vocals). On the other hand I also have to think of the Swedish band Clawfinger, because of the Hip Hop/Rap influences.

All with all a nice and decent album! Enjoy!

Our trademark sound is the melody that is laced throughout our music, taking listeners on an emotionally diverse rollercoaster ride. The fusion of 2 hardcore-crossover bands no excuse and point proven in September 1999. Both bands had been active for over 3 years.

New influences, a new singer and a scratcher (DJ CFK) brought the band to another level.

A demo was recorded in 2003 in Pink Noise Studio Eindhoven (SONY).

A few months later the departure of DJ CFK prompted a complete revamp and a new set.

Our efforts were rewarded by winning several rock rally’s in 2004. In the meantime some of our members studied at the music academy in Ostend to broaden their horizons.

We kept on playing shows and gaining live reputation till the end of 2007 when we played with our friends and legendary band ‘The Bollock Brothers’ in Keulen.

We recently finished recording a full album at The Farmhouse in Oostkamp, produced by Ace Zec (Customs, Nailpin,…).

Our first ‘Full’ got released end 2009 and topped off our 10th anniversary. It opened doors and was the beginning of a new chapter for the band.

The album was well received by several reviewers and magazines. A mix of heavy and melodious guitar riffs, funky baselines, unconventional drum rhythms, polished with a clean singing voice and synths, giving it a more poppy feel.

By then we compiled a self-made video for the song ‘Booya’. This song got chosen out of 100’s of records to get some airtime on Studio Brussel’s ‘Select’.

We got some more airplay in ‘All Area’s’ after a fantastic performance on the ‘Woosha’ summer festival.

We just signed up with Fakto Records for the distribution of the album in most music stores in the Benelux, France and Germany.

We recently won the jury price at Redrock Rally (Brugge) and another in Beernem. We played as the support act for Life of Agony and had a blast.

Right now we’re waiting for the release of our first ‘official’ video clip, recorded by Sam Van Olmen, student at the RITS.

From Glasgow, Scotland comes The Cosmic Dead. This band/collective was formed in 2010 and plays an outstanding combination of Psychedelic, Space and Kraut Rock. Their album Psychonaut contains a collection of early jams and rehearsel room recordings from 2010. This album is not just a Psychedelic Space Rock album. It is more like an experience that comes close to a journey through outer space. The album Psychonaut is definitely an astral masterpiece! Check out also their same titled album at Bandcamp. Enjoy!

Glasgow psych rockers The Cosmic Dead have certainly pushed the boat out with this collection of songs. Following the release of their acclaimed self-titled debut earlier on this year there has been a great deal of anticipation for Psychonaut and it certainly does not disappoint.

Psychonaut is less of an album and more of a journey through astral plains and the cosmic fields. Opening track ‘Lavinia’ is a slow burning wave of instrumental sound that completely envelops the listener and is probably better described as a jam than a track.

The pace of the album changes with following track ‘The Spaceman’ which enlists an additional band member to add ethereal background vocals to the phaser-driven number. This riff-heavy, percussion driven pace makes up the core of the album with tracks such as ‘Psych Ashtray Aktion Mother’ and ‘Serpent Coils The Earth’ which is a thrashy, edgy tune full of heavy distortion and squealing feedback.

Interspersed between these tracks are slow floating numbers such as the shortest track on the album, ‘Adimite Obscuritatem’ which sounds distinctly spiritual with tribal style drumming and harmonic droning vocals complimented by a subtle didgeridoo effect. Another slow number is ‘Austral Curvature’ with bassy grooves overlaid with screeching, trippy guitar and slicing percussion.

After listening to Psychonaut you should certainly feel just a little bit spaced out and with many of the tracks being over seven minutes long it’s not for the casual listener. But, with a little patience, Psychonaut is a brilliant album with a hell of a lot to give.

Keep On Shaking

Automatic Sam is the latest sensation from the east side of The Netherlands. This foursome plays stunning Alternative Guitar Rock with here and there some Blues. I saw these guys perform in a one minute presentation on the dutch television last night and they made a hell of an impression.

Texino is their brandnew debut album and it is really a great start for this band. Their sound reminds me somehow of the Belgian band Triggerfinger.

Texino has become a varied album with twelve songs that can be called entertaining. The guitar sound is awesome, the drums and bass are very solid and the singer is incredibly good. How surprising that this young guy has such a great voice. Automatic Sam is a band with a lot of potential. I hope to see this band soon on stage. Enjoy!

Who is Automatic Sam? Honestly, we’ve got no clue. But when you listen to Captain Beefheart singing about this man in his song Tarotplane, it sound like Sam’s a pretty cool dude with a great sense of boogie.

We are Automatic Sam; a fourpiece from Nijmegen with roots in the legendary Magic Barn in the far east of the Netherlands. The band was formed in late 2008 by Pieter Holkenborg (lead vocals / guitar), Rense Slings (guitar / vocals), Bob Hogenelst (drums / vocals) and Harm Wopereis (bass / vocals) and soon gets a great live reputation. Think of a speeding train of 70’s hardrock with rusty rivets attached to a wagon full of garage, some blues and all pulled by a locomotive fuelled by pure punk rock.

In November 2009 Automatic Sam releases “Hot Foot Oil”. The EP is widely praised: Well-known Dutch magazine OOR: “Lovely and cocky!” and Holland’s biggest platform for alternative music 3voor12: “Rough, but well thought rock album that never get boring”. “Hot Foot Oil” is sold out within a few months, both on CD and vinyl. The band is on the bill of festivals like Zwarte Cross, Valkhof Affaire and Paaspop plays the support show of bands like DeWolff, Claw Boys Claw, Orange Sunshine, and the entire Dutch tour with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Who is Bozo Texino? This mythical character from the American hobo culture, unshaven, unrestrained and hopping on freight trains without knowing his destination, was an inspiration for the album “Texino”. This full length debut contains twelve songs that tell the real story about the hobo Automatic Sam and his journey.

“Texino” was produced by Koen-Willem Toering (Woost) and Gijs Coolen (Woost / Coparck) and mastered by Pieter Kloos. Guest musicians are KW Toering, Otto Kokke (Dead Neanderthals) and Wout Kemkens (Shaking Godspeed). The record will be released on Suburban Records (CD) and Quadrofoon Records (Vinyl). Acid FM was conceived by Sparky Simmons in early 2002, with the intent to write & record hard rock that was a blend of two genre's; Stoner Rock & Psychedelic Rock. Sparky asked Doc if he was interested in this writing and recording project, to ultimately become a live, touring Hard Rock/Space Rock act. A long, tedious schedule was put into place, which has transpired into what we are today.

Throughout the life of Acid FM there have been two consistent members; Sparky Simmons & Doc Obergefell. We have had several drummers and musicians who worked with us for long periods of time, but no one has stood the test of time. Acid FM's first release "Electroviolent Paradox," we worked with Tony Hatfield & Mike Robinson (on one song). Tony is currently unavailable to perform or rehearse. We worked with Ben Shepherd & Ian Guthrie on drums, for the majority of the recording process on our upcoming release tentatively titled, "Phase II." We have also worked with Sicko Zero on drums & Adam Richardson on bongos, not to mention everyone else. In 2008 thru 2010 Acid FM consisted of Sparky Simmons Guitar, Vocals, Synths; Alan Sislby - Bass; Ugg - Guitar; & Matt Scheipers - Drums

Acid FM is a hybrid of Space Rock and Psychedelic rock, with other Non-Mainstream elements. Some call it "Experi-metal", Fuzz Rock, Desert Rock, Stoner Rock, and others call it "just good hard rock". This is a very nice free download demo that I found on Bandcamp.

Hypnotist is a Russian Stoner Rock band with huge Black Sabbath influences. This demo contains three tracks and it is well produced. This band takes a step in the right direction with this demo. I think there is a lot of potention in this band. So I look forward to the next release.

This is all I can tell about Hypnotist. There's not much information about this band, except for their Bandcamp page and their page at vkontankte. (That site is in Russian). Enjoy!

Villa Rocka is a dual disc with a audio side and a DVD side released by the band 3 Speed Automatic. This trio from Rotterdam, Holland plays a great mix of Hard Rock and Stoner Rock with seventies influences.

The audio part of this disc contains 6 tracks. The first five tracks were already on the album No Man's Land. So these songs are nothing new. (Although it's always alright to hear the song Walk On The Sun!) Villa Rocka is all about the sixth track that is called Who Knows What Evil Lurks In The Hearts Of Men... The Shadow Knows. This song is an almost 23 minute lasting epic masterpiece. This song was recorded as a soundtrack for the Dutch cult movie Horizonica. Enjoy!

"The starting point of 3Speed Automatic’s music can be found in the southern hardrock blues genre played by Five Horse Johnson, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Dixie Witch and also in the primitive, savage whip-rock ‘n’ roll of Motorhead and AC/DC. Sedimentation was the second recording by the band Elephantum from Amsterdam, Holland. This band did play great Stoner Rock with Psychedelic tendencies. This five-track EP is filled with huge and heavy guitar riffs, great bass and drum rhytms, a nice pinch of organ and some impressive vocals.

I learned about Elephantum when I heard the song Black Butterfly on the Stoner compilation album Ultimate Fuzz Collection vol 1. This song made me craving to hear more songs from this band. Eventually I managed to get this EP. Too bad I've never seen this band in action. Enjoy!

Elephantum was a psychedelic rock band from the Netherlands. It existed between 1998 and 2004. It came forth out of “Cosmic Insect”. Founding members Michiel Ferweda (guitars) and Matthijs Herder (vocals & guitars) tried several line-ups before settling with drummer Marc Fien and bassist Niels Keijzer. This line-up was active under the name “SAND”.

In January 2001 the “Transhuman Entity” album was recorded. A 40-minute odyssey which the press described as a perfect fusion between Kyuss and Pink Floyd. In June of the same year a 5 track EP was recorded with Emiel van de Berg on bassguitar. These recordings later surfaced as the “Sedimentation” EP and were mixed by Marcel van der Vondervoort (of Astrosoniq fame). It consisted of shorter and poppier tracks. After a name change into Elephantum and several line-up changes the band re-grouped with Stone In Egypt’s old rhythm section at the end of 2003 and the Sedimentaiton EP saw a worldwide release thru Freebird Records. But in 2004, after a period of extensive gigging (with Astrosoniq, Los Natas, Dozer, Epica, Wall Of Sleep among many others) the band decided to call it a day.

Elephantum was featured on the first two volumes of the Stonerrock.com compilation albums and on Fuzzorama’s “Ultimate Fuzz Collection vol 1”.

Le Scimmie is an Italian duo that plays some stunning Instrumental Doom/Stoner/Noise tunes. These guys has released an EP in 2007 and now they're back with the impressive album Dromomania.

A common thing with Instrumental bands is that they in general create albums with longlasting songs. This is definitely not the case with Le Scimmie, their album Dromomania contains ten tracks with a total length of just 23 minutes. So the songs are short, compact and straight to the point. That is the strenght of Le Scimmie! Enjoy!

The Italian duo "Le Scimmie" was born in the colorful spring of 2007 in Vasto, a seaside town in central Italy.

The ideas of the project are: guitar, drums, minimal power, raw sound.

In the winter of 2007 they recorded their first ep called "L'Origine Ep" that gets excellent support from the Italian press.

2008: the band reached the final at one of major Italian music festival called "Italia Wave" and remains on tour for about a year.

After a year of silence, in January 2011, Le Scimmie released their first album entitled "Dromomania".

Excavations is the debut album by the American band Brachiosauride. This band plays some impressive Experimental Sludge Metal with Stoner, Doom, Noise and several other influences.

Their music consists of intense heavy tunes with some whacky, but awesome vocals. Excavations is a varied album with songs that are a bit fast and songs with a more moderate tempo. This is an album that for sure must be heard. Enjoy!

Zeus is a band from Amsterdam, Holland. This quartet plays Heavy Rock with Stoner and Grunge influences. The singer of this band is Jeroen van Koningsbrugge. This guy is here in Holland a famous and humorous TV personality. It was a total surprise for me that he also has these vocal qualities.

This band was completed with three more than capable musicians. Zeus has released two albums until now. The first one was called Bad Signs from 2005 and this album from 2007 is just simply named 07. A new album was scheduled for 2009 or 2010, but it seems that Zeus for indefinitely has stopped.

I'm not familiar with their debut album Bad Signs, but I can tell that 07 is an impressive piece of work. Enjoy!

ZEUS was founded in 2003 by singer Jeroen van Koningsbrugge, drummer Paul Jansen and guitarist Roy Jansen. Soon after, bass player Bob Gerritsen completed the band. The objective was clear and simple: to make heavy, groovy rock music. Influenced by Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Karma To Burn, Transport League, Goatsnake and the wave of nineties grunge and stoner, ZEUS developed their sound.

After spending their first year in rehearsal rooms, ZEUS started recording in the spring of 2004 with producer Marcel vd Vondervoort (Astrosoniq and others). The band flew to New York to play the famous CBGB’s venue, trying out their material for the first time. Their American style and heavy performance kicked in right away, selling out the “Threetrackintroduction” demo immediately. ZEUS returned to Amsterdam, fired up and ready to finish their debut album “Bad Signs”. It was released independently in 2005 by ZEUS’ own label Sixxkiller and distributed by Suburban. Bad Signs said it all: raw, heavy groove rock grabbing you by the throat. While the album was getting positive reviews, ZEUS started doing what they do best: playing live shows till they dropped.

In October 2007, ZEUS’ second album “07” was released by Freebird Records. The album was very well received in Europe and the USA and contains 10 tracks that deliver a cocktail of old school heavy rock, melodic groove and even some doom. Like the debut album, 07 was mixed and produced by Marcel vd Vondervoort and mastered by Alan Ward. Somewhere in 2008, Bob Gerritsen decided to emigrate to Switzerland. He left the band in October 2009. Rowdy Lemaire joined the band as the new bass player. ZEUS has plans to release their third album late 2009 or early 2010.

The first time I've heard about this band was a version of the song Demon Cleaner on the South American Kyuss tribute album Listen Without Distraction.

Sick Porky is a fine Stoner Rock band from Buenos Aires, Argentina. This band is according to their MySpace influenced by the following: Black Sabbath, Kyuss, QOTSA,Mastodon, Black Label Society, Nebula, Unida, Fu Manchu, Baroness,The Mars Volta, Crowbar, Down, COC, At the drive in, Tool, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pelican, Entombed, Hermano, Neurosis, Danzig, Type O Negative, Pappos Blues, Metallica, Hellacopters, Turbonegro and Isis.

This list of bands gives a wide range of styles, but the sound of Sick Porky's really more based on pure Stoner Rock. What I miss in this list are for example the names Dozer and Truckfighters.

Sick Porky has released two full-length albums and this one is their debut named Ancestral. This album is a great collection of nice songs. Enjoy!

More than ten years fighting from the underworld of music, Sick Porky is now officially presenting the launch of its first album Ancestral. Edited by the label Zonda Records, this album compiles part of the work of these first years of career. The large number of live presentations, in some of which they shared stage with well-known Argentine bands such as Pez, Los Natas, Carajo, Satan Dealers and La Cruda, has given the band the deserved respect in Buenos Aires music arena. The bands fans continue to multiplicate, most of them curiously attracted by the talk of town succumb to the pork sound.

The two EPs edited during 2001-2003 a lot had to do with the musical growth of the band. This material had little (though important) diffusion in some of the most prestigious local media such as FM Rock & Pop and several Internet/podcasting radio stations heard worldwide (Netherlands, United Kingdom, United States, and several other countries). The first EP was produced by the tandem Gaby Ruiz Díaz/ Macabre from Catupecu Machu, whereas the production of the second EP was done by Agustín Rocino (Cuentos Borgeanos), who also was chosen as producer of Ancestral.

Another determining factor for the course of the band were the several participations in compilations of international reach like Listen without distraction, an Argentinean tribute to the stoner cult band Kyuss and Loco Gringos Have a Party: Southamerican stoner rock in which they performed all together with Natas and other bands such as Buffalo (Argentina), Yajaira (Chile) and Reino Ermitaño (Perú).

Last week I've posted the album The Wind Blows Witches From The Sky by the band Wallrus. This is their final one called Burn The Shivers. This album is a perfect continuation on The Wind Blows Witches From The Sky.

Burn The Shivers is an album full of great Blues driven Stoner Rock. There is even more room for the harmonica. This album is slightly more Blues oriented than it's predecessor. But the Kyuss and QOTSA influences are certainly still present in their sound. The album Burn The Shivers is an improvement over their previous work. The vocals are even better, as far as possible. This guy has really an impressive voice. Damn, that this band has stopped is a real pity. Enjoy!

1999 Is the year a band was formed in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) and they decided to hit the stages real quick. The name that would appear on the bills is Wallrus and stoner is their game. That same year they released their debut EP followed by two albums and in September 2007 their latest ones come out. "Burn The Shivers" contain 12 tracks and a videoclip of the song "High Plains Drifter".

The songs are driven by heavy sludgy guitars with catchy riffs and with leads. A nice role is there for the harmonica that vocalist Rob uses in the songs, it gives it a bluesy edge. But he has also a good voice that can do clean soft part but also raw whiskey shouting.

With "Burn The Shivers" the band delivers a nice album that is not Metal but a nice one for your car or in a saloon. And as a bonus you get the video with the clip, making of the clip and a picture gallery.

A catch album for those you are into Stoner Rock 'n' Roll.

We Are All Dead

From Denver, USA comes the duo Adai. These guys play incredible Sludge/Doom/Metal. Their previous releases are the EP's ...I Carry from 2008 and Felo De Se from 2010. These two EP's are combined in the album We Are All Dead. This album is a garantee for some compelling atmospheric, brutal and heavy tunes. Their sound has some similarities with bands like Isis, Pelican and Neurosis.

It is safe to say that Adai has delivered a real masterpiece with this album! Enjoy!

The Denver duo enlarge their innovative experimental doom metal sound on their latest release, Felo De Se (June 2010) on Cavity Records. Adai are massive on both stage and record. Felo De Se was recorded by Matt Talbott (Hum) and mixed by Kurt Ballou (Converge), and not surprisingly Adai achieve an astounding amount of color (instead of just going for “dark”) while keeping it crushingly heavy. The two friends that comprise the band, Justin Trujilo (drums, samples) and Devin Mendoza (guitars, vox, amps) are hard-working, diligent, focused, and they clearly love what they do.

When you hear the name Maserati, you will probably think of a fancy Italian sports car. Beside that Maserati is also the name of a band from Athens, Georgia, USA. This foursome plays Progressive Instrumental Rock with Post Rock and Space influences. This band has released their first album in 2000 and since that time they've released a couple of Albums, EP's and split albums. This album is called Inventions For The New Season from 2007.

Characteristic for this band are the repetitive guitars and rhythms. The songs on this album exude an atmospheric mood. A major influence for Masarati must be Pink Floyd.

Maserati is a so called Post Rock band, but Inventions For The New Season is an album that goes beyond the Post Rock sound. Judge for yourself! Enjoy!

On Inventions for the New Season, Maserati move simultaneously forward and backward away from their clear associations with the modern post-rock of groups like Tortoise and the Mercury Program and seemingly back in time to the progenitors of prog rock (King Crimson, early Rush) and especially Krautrock (Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream). Their nearest contemporaries may be the prolific yet obscure Finnish outfit Circle, especially their tendencies toward driving guitar/keyboard workouts in the motorik vein, as would befit a band named after the finest of Italian sports cars. These songs hurtle forward at an ever-increasing pace, which they rely on to build intensity rather than the standard quiet-to-loud dynamics of the post-rock genre. Actually, they're not alone in mining this realm of instrumental rock -- they also share with peers the Turing Machine and Ostinato the ability to sound elaborate without actually playing complicated music -- most of the riffs are built on simple, clean guitar figures augmented with chiming and echoing effects and building and expanding in their relentless repetition. Every track here is a stunner, especially the opening "Inventions" and the bass-driven Floyd-ian barnburner "Show Me the Season," culminating in a peak with the tongue-in-cheek nod to the Police's brief foray into progressive rock, knowingly titled "Synchronicity IV."

Zero Nowhere is a one-man Post Rock project from Lublin, Poland. His music sounds in my opinion similar to bands like Pelican and Red Sparowes, but there is more than just that. There are also some Sludge and Stoner influences present in his music.
The atrabilious and dejected atmosphere is in a great way propagated on these EP's. The first EP Floriculture contains six tracks and the second EP Flower Of Void contains one twenty minutes lasting track.
I'm pretty impressed of what this guy has acomplished on his own. These EP's are really great! The highlight for me is the triptych of the Floriculture EP called Portraits (I - Soul Dealer II - Dancing Trees III - The Fog).

So i'm a 21 year old musician from Lublin, Poland. I started making music as Zero Nowhere in 2008. It's a instrumental solo project, all music on these EP's was written & recorded by myself. I have also older EP called "Witchcraft" and a compilation of some of my older songs with some unreleased material called "Whispers Of Shooting Stars" which was released by Dairyola Records. Also Floriculture was released on limited CD-r edition on Kitty On Fire records. My name was taken from an Eyehategod song. I'm playing mix of stoner, psychedelic and sludge music with some drone and experimental elements. My biggest influences are stoner / psychedelic and drone bands like Dead Meadow, Yawning Man, Earth or Electric Wizard as well as sludge bands like Eyehategod or Buzzoven. I play also in some other various projects like a sludge / stoner metal project named Eyes Like Halogen with vocalist of Cerber, psychedelic and experimental band named Flora and my own drone project called Golden Cloud. I'm also planning to make some sludge band in future, as well as release some more experimental psychedelic rock material with vocals under the name Black Sunflowers.

Wallrus was a band from Rotterdam, Holland. This Stoner band is clearly influenced by bands like Kuyss, QOTSA. But there is more in the music of Wallrus and that is the Blues component. This is mainly carried out by the singer and his harmonica, so that it also makes me think of Five Horse Johnson, for example.

The Wind Blows Witches From The Sky is an great album with excellent songs. This album is the first full-length album by Wallrus. After this one they've released one more album called Burn The Shivers in 2007. Wallrus has disbanded in 2010. And that is too bad, because this band was quite awesome. Enjoy!

Sunset In A New Town

Smoking Bird is a Spanish band that plays 70's influenced Hard Rock. Their music contains also a pinch of Stoner Rock.

Their great album Sunset In A New Town is their first full-length release and after this album they've released two more in 2006 and 2010.

The songs from Sunset In A New Town are quite energetic and have a real Rock 'n' Roll vibe. Do not expect any lengthy Psychedelic jams or other experimental knick-knacks. This is just straight forward and no bullshit Hard Rock music. Enjoy!

Smoking Bird was born in 1997.

By 1998 the band released its first demo, "Fuckin' A Bottle", 2000 marked the release of "Smoking Bird". "Losing Touch" CD/EP is recorded and released in 2001.

In September of 2002 Smoking Bird recorded their first full length album "Sunset In A New Town" produced with Fernando Pardo. Once again, the band enjoyed rave reviews.

All along 2005 and after two years on the road, Smoking Bird recorded and self-produced "Naughty Little Girls",released in early 2006.

"Survivors" was the next step for the band, self-produced, released in 2010 and recorded at the band own studios for the first time.

In 2011, Smoking Bird contributed with a song to the Monster Magnet tribute, "Kiss The Right Side Of Your Brain" released by Monster Fuzz Records.

Here is another great contribution. This time it is the three track EP First Chapters by the Canadian band Tunguska Mammoth. These four guys from Montreal play Hardcore influenced Stoner/Sludge Metal. According to their Facebook page, Tunguska Mammoth is inspired by the following bands: Mastodon, Baroness, Priestess, Clutch, Bison B.C., Crowbar, the bands of Stéphane Vigeant (Karmadooza, Floating Widget, Madking Ludwig), High of Fire, Pelican, Black Sabbath, Doomriders, Kyuss and Groovy Aardvark.

This list gives quite an impression of what Tunguska Mammoth is about.

They're heavy, brutal and aggressive. The lead guitar player is a true Metal virtuoso. But the other members of this band deserve as much credits.

With the growing desire to play their own music not fit for their cover band, GPS, Maxime Bellerose (ex-Lacrimae Mortalium), Paolo Di Stefano and Mathieu Savage decided to get together with drummer Pierre-Hugues Rondeau (ex-Hope&Horror), to try and fill this void. After a few rehearsals jamming on Melodic Metal riffs, the sound naturally progressed towards wahat Tunguska Mammoth is now: a combination of the energy of Metal and Hardcore mixed with Stoner groove and progressive rock’s intensity. Their first EP intitled “First Chapterse”, recorded in their own rehearsal studio, serves as an introduction for the band’s forthcoming concept album.

Thanks to the guys from the band Cerber for sharing their demo!

Cerber is a fresh new band from Poland. This trio plays Stoner/Sludge Metal with Hardcore influences. Their DIY demo called Z Prochu is a great start of this band. Their music is heavy, aggressive and grooving. The guitar riffs are stunning, just as the rhytm section is. The vocals are raw and brutal. The lyrics are part English and for a part Polish.

I think there's a great future for this band. I look at least forward to their next release. Enjoy!

Grass Grew

The following contrubution is a real weird EP by the band Rainbow Teeth from Long Island, New York, U.S.A.

These guys present their selves as a Spagetti Indie band. This is a strange description of their music, but it is just more than that. There are also Post-Hardcore, Math and Metal influences audible in their music. The song structures are pretty complex.

I think Rainbow teeth has similarities to bands like Dillinger Escape Plan, Cephalic Carnage and Macabre. Especially the song Beach Life does remind me a lot of Macabre. My girlfriend said the following: "Sounds somewhat like Macabre, a band with an unique sound. I've never heard a band that sounds like them, until now." This is a quite fitting quote about this song.

This EP is a nice release for the ones who like complex Metal music. Enjoy!

Out In The Cold

This nice piece of vinyl was created by the Belgian band Solenoid. This five-piece band plays a combination of Metal and Stoner Rock. This has resulted in in an excellent album with very strong songs. Their music is pretty uptempo and straight-forward. Sometimes Solenoid takes you back to the eighties, because there are some traces of NWOBHM present in their music. Beside that, you can hear on this album also some influences like Thrash and Speed Metal.
According to their Facebook page, Solenoid is influenced by the following: Motörhead, Slayer, The Hellacopters, Iron Maiden, Mastodon, Supersuckers, Mercyful Fate, Black Sabbath, Zeke, Saxon, Corrosion of Conformity, AC/DC, High on Fire, Kiss, Trouble, Five Horse Johnson, Metallica, Discharge, Thin Lizzy, Hüsker Dü, Soundgarden, Entombed, Judas Priest, Kyuss, Dinosaur jr, Crowbar and Dio
But the question remains, is this more a Stoner Rock album or more a Metal album. It definitely points out towards Metal.
In any case, this is an excellent album with no-nonsense and kick-ass music. Enjoy!

New wave of what? British heavy metal? Not exactly...Solenoid emerge straight from the Belgian foundations of metal and rock.

Heavy Metal? Not quite… Solenoid carry more in their thick soup than the metal of their peers who are still stuck into the simple steel driven alternative of the heavy genre. This new wave of Belgian heavy rock ‘n roll could do the trick.

These five scruffy rock addicts had been playing in almost every guitar based band in and around their hometown Genk. Fucking up the best elements of whatever they were into at that time, Solenoid’s engine got oiled with the best of what was yet to come: a break necking view on the past decades of rock ‘n metal. How furious are Solenoid that they make Lemmy seem ironic and leave him ‘Out In The Cold’? They exhume the ‘Angelspray’ of the old dark clouded Sabbath. Even some blistering punkabilly swing or old school riffing taught by the iron lady of Dickinson and his gang.

Tours with Gwar, Anvil, Valis and a US tour with We’re All Gonna Die and labelmates Cortez already showed a great deal of Solenoid’s open mindedness, going from metal over rock to stoner. And if Chris Tsangarides (mix) doesn’t ring a bell, here you go: Judas Priest, Exodus, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath and …Solenoid all have Chris’ name mentioned somewhere in their liner notes. And after working with bands like Opeth, In Flames, Spiritual Beggars and The Haunted, Göran Finnberg mastered Solenoid’s debut album. With references like these you can’t go wrong.

No nonsense bullshit or over the top shredding posers but straight to the bone in your face heavy rock music as it was supposed to sound like when the foundations were laid.

Voodoom Creatures

The next band contribution comes from Kentucky, U.S.A.
They Yearn For What They Fear is a bass and drum duo that plays Experimental Psychedelic Sludge/Doom. Their EP called The Infernal Plains contains four awesome songs. These guys claim that their sound is akin to bands like Moloch, Thou, Earthless, Electric Wizard, Torche and Earth, to give you a small idea of what They Yearn For What They Fear is about.
The sound of this duo is as expected heavy and brutal. The vocals sound very angry and dejected.
At some parts in their music there is also guitar and keyboards present. These additional musicians makes the sound of The Infernal Plains more complete. Enjoy!

Around since 2005ish, They Yearn For What They Fear started as a wall-of-noise grind unit, and while they can definitely still tap into all the rage of speed, they've become incredibly dynamic in their sound and tone while never sacrificing heaviness or their own brand of apocalyptic psychedelia. They are hard at work crafting a sonic tome worthy of their name, as well as split releases of all varieties (and hopefully a re-release of their lone testament to their ultra-violent roots, The Art of Communication via Concentric in the near future).

Cato Salsa Experience is a Sixties influenced Garage Rock band from Norway with slight Psychedelic tendencies. A Good Tip For A Good Time is their second release and it is such an awesome album. This album is filled with tunes that are really a garantee for a great vibe. The music is energetic and jumpy, it will somehow make your body move. I was hooked from the first time I've heard this album and I still am. So this urge to share it with you.
There is only one thing with this album: It is not available anymore! So I have a question to all of my readers: If you see this album somewhere, please buy it for me! If you see it somewhere on the web, please order it! I will reimburse all costs! Anyway... Enjoy!

Blasting from your speakers like a spicy tornado, Cato Salsa Experience shimmies, shakes, and squirms with unfettered guitar distortion, bombastic drumming, and layers of retro-cool organs that sound like they're as much fun to play as they are to listen to. Hearkening core elements of classic garage rock, Norwegians Cato Thomassen (vocals and guitar), Christian Engfelt (bass), Jon Magne Riise (drums), and Nina Bjorndalen (keyboards) fuse late-'60s models of the Rolling Stones and the Who with something derivative of the Hives and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. "Time to Freak Out!," "Listen to Me Daddy'O," "Got Soul if You Want It," and "So the Circus Is Back in Town" all swirl in an exuberant alt-rock, go-go dance shack infection. Though the album is easily digested as a whole, "Deadbeat" and "M.F." further exhibit fun jungle drums, goofy organs, freewheeling lyrics, and even some slick horn work by Jaga Jazzist. Perhaps it's the vintage equipment or the bands psychedelic name, but A Good Tip for a Good Time is raucous listening that dares you to dance around in your underwear for no particular reason.
